Chennai to see more rains, showers to intensify by next week

Chennai residents can rejoice as rains in the city are likely to continue well into the coming week. The Indian Meteorological Department has already forecast light to moderate rain over the weekend, private weather bloggers say these showers could intensify from Monday.

According to Skymet, the next 24 hours will see light scattered rains over the state and  a few moderate spells. However this will give way to a ‘monsoon surge’ around November 27. This will bring with it both rains and thundershower over the state

Weather blogger Pradeep John, commonly referred to as ‘Tamil Nadu Weatherman’ too predicted rains for the weekend.

“Clouds seen from Thoothukudi to Delta to Chennai. A squall like cloud band seen off Chennai coast. Movement is from North East to South West with a ripple effect….Dream rainy days in Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram continues,” he says on his post in Facebook.

He however added that the last week of November and first week of December will bring plenty more rains to the state.

Explaining the reason for the upcoming rain, weather expert Srikanth and co-founder of weather blogging site Chennai Rains, tell TNM, “A low pressure area is forming over the Bay of Bengal and from Monday we can see an increase in rain. This will last for an entire week. What will be important about this spell is that it will help districts that have not yet got their share of adequate rain and still have a deficit. “

Srikanth says that this includes – Chennai, Ariyalur, Kanchipuram, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Tiruvarur districts.

Chennai is reportedly facing a rain deficit of 40% and the showers will help meet this shortage. The city had faced a crippling drought in the summer, with all four of its reservoirs running dry, forcing the government to bring in water from by trains from Vellore District. At the end of 2018, the city had seen one of its driest monsoons was staring at deficit of 54% rainfall.
