Ex-DMK MLA sentenced to 3 years in jail in attempt to kill his wife

Ex-DMK MLA A Asokan has been sentenced to three years in jail in connection with an attempt to murder case.

According to reports, the former DMK MLA had attempted to kill his wife, mother-in-law and daughter with a gun in December 2015 at their residence in Chennai’s Pattinapakkam area. Hema, Asokan’s second wife, had gone to Kotturpuram to help victims of the Chennai floods along with one of Asokan’s assistants, a man named Sathish. The two had gone to distribute food to victims of the floods.

When they returned home at night, Asokan was allegedly angered seeing Hema with Sathish and began insulting and abusing her and even questioned her character. Following this, he then asked her to leave the house.

When she didn’t leave, he picked up his pistol and fired two shots at her, though he missed.

Hema immediately went and filed a complaint with the Pattinapakkam police. Asokan was charged under sections 509 (outraging the modesty of a woman) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and also with applicable provisions of the Arms Act. The case was transferred from Mahila court to a special court which oversaw trial of cases related to current and former government representatives.

Judge J Shanthi found him guilty and sentenced him to three years ‘rigorous imprisonment.’

During the initial phases of the trial, Asokan reportedly denied the allegations against him, claiming that only the gun had been recovered, while the bullets were not.

Asokan is the former MLA of the Tiruvarur constituency. He won the seat in 1996 when contesting as a DMK member. He later joined the AIADMK in 2006 after being denied a ticket by the DMK. He was made the special representative of the Tamil Nadu government in New Delhi when the AIADMK  was in power in 2011. However, he ultimately returned to the DMK in March 2018.
