TN school teacher suspended after sexual abuse complaints, but no police case filed

A government school teacher from Namakkal has been suspended for sexually abusing his students within school premises. Following complaints made by a few VIII standard students from the government Middle School near Rasipuram in Namakkal, the accused Suresh, a 37-year-old maths teacher, was immediately suspended by the District Educational Officer.

Suresh who had been teaching at the government Middle School for the past 9 years, has been accused of passing inappropriate and sexually loaded comments while taking class. Instead of teaching maths as he was supposed to, Suresh had instead taken classes on reproductive body parts to the class 8 students, making them uncomfortable.

In their complaint letter, submitted by 7-8 students along with their parents to the school authorities, they have specified inappropriate teaching and sexual abuse.

A police complaint, however, has not been registered on the accused. Sexual abuse of children falls under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). Speaking to TNM, Udayakumar, Namakkal District Educational Officer says, “Monitoring officer had conducted inquiries and have submitted his report. Based on it we have taken the action.” However, this also means that after the period of suspension, the teacher could be appointed at another school.

When TNM reached out to Namagiripettai police station, they confirmed that no complaints have been made by the school or the students.

Confirming that police have not been involved, DEC explains that further investigations are currently being conducted by his department. “This is departmental action. We will be conducting detailed inquiry and based on it further action will be taken,” he adds.

The students are currently being provided with counselling he shared. A year ago, Suresh was accused of theft by school authorities. However, this is the first time sexual abuse complaint has been made on him the DEO added.

In December last year, the headmaster of a government school in Pennalurpettai, Tiruvallur went missing after allegedly sexually abusing girl students inside the school premises. The school, which is located within the Uthukottai police station limits, has around 300 students studying in classes 6 to 10. The incident came to light after the victim’s family lodged a police complaint at the Pennalurpettai police station.
