‘Asuran’ out on Amazon Prime even as theatrical run continues

Although Vetrimaaran’s Asuran is still running in theatres, the film has now released on OTT platform Amazon Prime. The film stars Dhanush and Manju Warrier in lead roles and is based on the Tamil novel Vekkai by Poomani. It follows the story of a Dalit family on the run.

Chennai’s SPI Cinemas, popularly known as Sathyam Cinemas, still has two shows of the film. Other theatres like Luxe Cinemas and Rohini Silver Screens have also listed the film till next Thursday.

Despite two big films, Vijay’s Bigil and Karthi’s Kaithi, releasing for the Deepavali weekend and occupying most of the screens in the city, Asuran has managed to continue its theatrical run and has been declared a box-office hit. The film released on October 4 and has reportedly crossed Rs 100 crore in collections.

Asuran received wide acclaim for its portrayal of caste violence and narrating the story from the point of view of a Dalit hero. In the film, a young boy kills a dominant caste man who murders a member of his family. Dhanush plays the boy’s father. However, the film was also criticised by some for glorifying violence.

Vetrimaaran and Dhanush last came together for Vada Chennai, a gangster film set in North Madras. The two are also working on the sequel to the film.

Asuran marked the Tamil debut of Malayalam actor Manju Warrier who has dubbed for herself in the film in the Nellai dialect. Manju plays Dhanush’s wife in the film and received acclaim for her portrayal of the fiery Pachaiyammal.

Asuran was produced by Kalaippuli S Thanu and had music by GV Prakash. The film has become Dhanush’s top grosser in the state.

Several new releases have found their way to OTT platforms within weeks of their release. Kaithi is scheduled to release on Hotstar on November 28.
