Light rains predicted over parts of Chennai for the next two days

Chennai’s drought this summer was a topic discussed widely across the world. However, the city had a good run during the south-west monsoon (June to September), recording an excess of 34% rainfall. According to the information provided on Regional Meteorological Centre’s web page, Chennai received 587.8 mm of rainfall as opposed to its normal measurement of 439.6 mm.

Now, with the north-east monsoon not far away, Chennai is expected to receive light rains for the next two days. The latest weather bulletin from Met department, issued at 10.00 pm on Friday, predicts light rains that are likely to occur in some areas of the city over the next 48 hours.

The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy with maximum and minimum temperatures likely to be around 34 and 27 degree Celsius respectively in the city. This comes as an improvement to the week ending October 2 that recorded a deficit of 39%.

Light to moderate rain is also likely to occur at a few places over Tamil Nadu until October 8. North-east monsoon began after a delay of 11 days, on November 1 last year. NE monsoon usually begins on October 20 with a deviation of 5 days.

Popular weather blogger Pradeep John in his latest post shared the observations from Chennai Metro Water department that said that the groundwater levels of all 15 zones in the city have improved after the September rains. Areas like Madhavaram, Thir Vi Ka Nagar and Ambattur have improved levels of over 1 meter.

According to a report in the Times of India, N Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, RMC, Chennai had said that the NE monsoon could start after the third week of October this year around. The intensity of the rain in the city may increase after October 15 if a system forms and develops over the Bay of Bengal.
