TN transport dept to operate over 17,000 buses for Puja, Deepavali holidays

With Ayudha Puja holidays and Deepavali fast approaching, the Tamil Nadu Transport department is gearing up to manage a surge in its patrons travelling to different parts of the state. Transport Minister MR Vijayabhaskar has announced the operation of special buses, nearly  6,000 for the puja holidays and 11,000 for Deepavali.

According to a press release issued by the Transport department, ahead of Ayudha puja to be celebrated on October 7, 1,695 special buses along with 2,225 buses would be operated for 3 days from October 4. 1,242 special buses will transport passengers from other cities, including Coimbatore, Tirupur and Bengaluru, this weekend.

30 special reservation counters will begin functioning from Thursday at Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT), MEPZ Tambaram, Poonamallee and Madhavaram for passengers wanting to reserve tickets for the Puja holidays. Special buses would be operated on October 8 and 9 for their return journey. To reduce the surge at CMBT, buses bound for Andhra Pradesh will depart from Madhavaram Bus Terminus.

As for Deepavali, 2,275 regular buses and 4,265 special buses will operate daily from Chennai for three days from October 24. For this purpose, 26 special ticket counters have been proposed to be opened from October 23.

To ease congestion for commuters wanting to return to Chennai after Deepavali, 4,627 special buses from various places between October 27 and 30 would be operated.

The buses will be operated from Puratchi Thalaivar MGR Bus Terminus (CMBT) in Koyambedu, Tambaram Sanatorium MEPZ, Madhavaram bus terminus, Poonamallee and KK Nagar. Buses from Tambaram railway station bus stop will be operated to places including Tiruvannamalai via Thindivanam, Kancheepuram and Chidambaram.

The CMBT terminus will operate buses to Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruchi, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Erode, Ooty and Ramanathapuram. Buses from Tambaram Sanatorium would be operated to places including Kumbakonam and Thanjavur while those on ECR to Puducherry could take the buses from KK Nagar.
