Fierce Gunfight on in Kashmir, Protesters Clash With Security Forces

Srinagar: A fierce gunfight is raging on between militants and security forces in the hometown of slain Hizbul Mujhadeen leader Burhan Wani at Tral in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

The encounter started at around 6 pm when troops laid a cordon in Hayuna village after police and army suspected two operatives of Hizbul Mujahideen were hiding there.

Police said the encounter broke out after the security forces received an intelligence input about the presence of some militants in the Hayuna-Appu village of Tral. A joint column of army, CRPF and police immediately cordoned off the area and started the search operation to flush out militants.

When the search party was zeroing in on a suspected house, militants lobbed grenades and opened heavy volume of fire. Security forces immediately retaliated resulting in a fierce exchange of firing between the two sides

“There was an input and we worked on it. We have launched the operation and the encounter is presently going on. As soon as the identification (of ultras) is done we will let you know”, a senior police officer said

Massive law and order problem erupted soon after the news about the encounter spread in the area.

A rifle was snatched from a CRPF jawan by a few youth just outside the encounter site.

Scores of youth and women pelted stones on the security forces in a bid to march to the encounter site. Later some women too joined the youth to chase the away the security forces who were battling hard to control the situation.
