Three killed, 33 injured as TNSTC bus collides with lorry on Hosur highway

Three people were killed and 33 injured as a Tamil Nadu government bus collided with a lorry in Krishnagiri district on Monday.

According to reports, the accident happened around 4 am on Monday on the Krishnagiri – Hosur highway near Samalpallam near Shoolagiri.

The bus, owned and operated by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), was going to Hosur from Tiruvannamalai. As the bus was crossing Samalpallam area, around 60 kilometres from Hosur, the bus collided with a lorry that was coming from the opposite direction. In the impact, the bus driver Vediyappan died on the spot while conductor Sudhakar and a passenger Chinnakkannu died in hospital shortly after.

A total of 33 passengers have been admitted in nearby government hospitals in Hosur and Krishnagiri and are undergoing treatment. Passengers with serious injuries have also been referred to Salem Medical College and Hospital for further treatment.

Speaking to TNM about the accident, a police officer said that the bus was going towards Hosur and the lorry was on its way to Krishnagiri when the accident happened. “Both vehicles were negotiating downward slopes on the road and were approaching a junction. The lorry suffered a tyre-burst just before the accident and that might have caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. It came and rammed into the bus, causing the accident,” he said. The lorry driver has also been admitted for severe injuries and is being treated in Hosur Government hospital.
