Fresh Autopsy on 'Whistleblower' Jawan’s Body After Family Raises Doubts

TV grab of Sahayak Roy Mathew

Thiruvananthapuram: A fresh autopsy was conducted on the body of soldier Roy Mathew, who was seen in a sting operation criticising ‘Sahayak'(Orderly) system, on Saturday after family suspected foul play.

Mathew, 33, was found hanging from the ceiling of a room in an abandoned barrack in Deolali cantonment in Nasik, Maharashtra on Thursday.

PTI quoted his family members as alleging that there were marks of beating on his feet and that blood had clotted in some parts.

“The last call was to his wife at around 8 pm on February 25. He was upset, he was crying, and said that he was having trouble at work because of the sting video. While he was speaking, the line got disconnected. The family tried calling back, but it was switched off,” his brother-in-law Gracious told CNN-News18.

Mathew’s family reportedly filed a complaint with Kollam District Collector and the police, raising suspicions over their son’s death and a postmortem was ordered at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital.

Mathew had gone missing after he purportedly figured in an expose by a news portal on alleged misuse of the “sahayak” or orderly system.

Army has said it had not questioned Mathew after the video surfaced, which showed soldiers working as sahayaks, walking dogs of senior army officials or taking their children to school.

Mathew had joined the army 13 years ago and was working as an artillery gunner with the Rocket Regiment 214 in Nasik camp since the last one year.
