Chennai auto driver dies after being attacked by 3 school students

Chennai police have arrested three school students for assaulting an auto rickshaw driver after he had chided them the previous evening for rash driving. The auto rickshaw driver died later of a heart attack.

According to reports, Dilip Kumar was driving his auto back home in Chengalpattu on Monday evening when three students, all in school uniform, zipped past his vehicle in a rash manner on a two-wheeler, brushing against the auto. Angered at the damage done to his auto, Dilip chased the two-wheeler and confronted the boys, resulting in an argument between them. This led to a fistfight, as the boys attacked Dilip with logs and stones lying on the side of the road. Unable to bear the heavy blows raining down on him, Dilip fell on the road and injured in his head. One of the boys drove away his auto while the other two boys followed him on their bike.

People who were passing by the spot of the attack alerted the police who took a badly-injured Dilip to the station to lodge a complaint against the boys. While at the station, Dilip complained of dizziness and chest pain, and was taken to the Chengalpattu government hospital, where he died shortly after. The doctors told the police that he died of a heart attack as a result of the assault.

Police immediately launched a search for the boys and using the CCTV footage recovered from the spot of the attack, they found them and arrested them. They were reportedly students of a private school and were on their way to meet their friends to celebrate the upcoming holidays.

An FIR for assault and theft has also been registered against the minors, which could be altered based on further investigation. They also found the auto abandoned in Alapakkam, as per reports.
