Chennai police nab 10-member gang that fled the city after burglary

Efficient communication and mobile photo records helped the Chennai police arrest 10 gang members from Rajasthan within 24 hours of the crime. They had allegedly burgled around 120 sovereigns of gold from Nanganallur in Chennai.

According to reports, Ramesh, his wife and kids live in SBI colony extension in Nanganallur in suburban Chennai. On Friday, Ramesh was out, while his wife and kids had gone to visit their relatives in the evening when the burglars allegedly struck. When the family returned to their house, they found that their cupboard had been ransacked and jewellery was missing. They filed a police complaint with the St Thomas Mount police station, which registered an FIR based on the complaint. The station also formed a special team under the leadership of Prem Anand Sinha, the Additional Commissioner of Police, South which started scourging through the CCTV footage from the locality.

In the footage, they spotted the accused escaping with a gunny bag from their street. Police also collected mobile phone records from the area. Using the mobile phone information and a reliable tip-off, the police found that the group was moving towards Ajmer by train. The team immediately alerted the police in Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh who, with the help of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), nabbed the gang at the Nagda railway station. The police also recovered the stolen jewellery from them.

Investigations revealed that the gang had cases against them, including a burglary in Tambaram, dating back to 2017.

As per the police, on the day of theft in Nanganallur, they had hired two autorickshaws from the locality to reach Pazhavanthangal station with the loot and had reached Chennai Central to board the Jaipur Express. The police noted that the gang’s usual modus operandi was loitering in the locality and looking for locked houses to break into. The gang would also leave the city immediately with the loot to dispose of the stolen items in their hometown.
