Tamil Nadu govt hikes price of Aavin milk by Rs 6 per litre

The Tamil Nadu government has increased the selling price of Aavin milk by Rs 6 per litre, applicable from Monday. The price of procurement of cow and buffalo’s milk was also increased simultaneously by Rs 4 and Rs 6 respectively. The last time the price was revised was in 2014, during former CM J Jayalalithaa’s tenure.

As per the latest revision, the price of Aavin Nice (blue sachet; toned milk) has been increased from Rs 37 to Rs 43 per litre, Aavin Diet (magenta sachet; double toned) from Rs 34 to Rs 40, Aavin Green Magic (green sachet; standardised milk) from Rs 41 to Rs 47 and Aavin Premium (orange sachet; full cream milk) from Rs 45 to Rs 51 per litre.

The price for procurement of cow’s milk has been increased from Rs 28 to Rs 32, and the price for buffalo’s milk has been increased from Rs 35 to Rs 41.

In a release, the State government pointed out that the cost of upkeep of dairy cattle has increased over the years and hence, based on requests from the milk producers’ union, this decision has been taken. Moreover, to maintain the quality of milk delivered to consumers, the selling price has also been increased, the government said.

DMK leader MK Stalin pointed out that it was the government’s responsibility to ensure quality of milk and it was wrong on their part to tax working and middle class people.

AavinMilk https://t.co/46z37pHqfv

AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran called for the price hike to be revoked. “It is possible to increase procurement prices without increasing selling price by regulating administrative malpractice and by proper functioning of the milk producers’ union,” he tweeted.

According to reports, the price hike has been in the offing for quite some time, and the government had to wait until the Model Code of Conduct was removed after the Vellore Lok Sabha polls to make the announcement. Moreover, private milk suppliers have increased the prices between Rs 4 to Rs 8 over the past two years.

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had hinted at the price hike in the Assembly last month. “Considering the condition of the dairy farmers, this government will hike the procurement prices for milk producers. Likewise, the milk prices for consumers will be increased so that milk cooperative societies do not suffer losses,” he was reported as saying. The issue was raised by DMK members in the Assembly.

The price hike came as a surprise to many, who expressed their disappointment on social media

AavinMilk #PriceHike
