Days after a TASMAC employee was found dead at the shop where he worked, more than 300 TASMAC employees from Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri staged protests demanding action against the accused. Their protest was a part of the statewide protest organized for one day, following the death of the employee.

According to reports, M Raja (44), who worked in a TASMAC outlet in Gurubarapalli near Krishnagiri, was found dead by his coworkers around midnight on August 14. He was allegedly attacked by unidentified men while he was shutting the shop that night.

Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Edappadi K Palaniswami issued a statement on Friday condoling M Raja’s death and offering Rs 10 lakh compensation for his family. Expressing his heartfelt sympathies to Raja’s family, Palaniswami ordered that the monetary compensation be disbursed immediately from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund. He also said that Raja’s wife will be provided with a government job based on her educational qualifications.

However, around 300 employees from the TASMAC Employees Association in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri sat on a dharna wearing black badges. Their main demands were to increase the compensation provided to the victim’s family to Rs 25 lakh and to initiate action against the accused. They also demanded security for TASMAC workers who engage in the daily collection since protesters say they are increasingly facing attacks. Some other demands put forth by the employees were that their working hours be reduced to eight hours and that the outlets close at 8 pm instead of the existing 10 pm. The protesting employees pointed out that they become a target for miscreants since it gets late in the night to settle daily collections in the outlet and close the books. They also demanded that the daily collections be picked up government officials every day at closing time so that the outlets and the staff don’t become targets for thieves.
