28-year-old Chennai woman abducted and robbed, dumped on a highway

A 28-year-old woman was abducted by two robbers, who looted her of her possessions and then dumped her on the road near Sholavaram in Chennai.

The incident took place on Thursday night, near Sholavaram, according to reports. Martha*, a resident of Nallur, was returning home from work on Thursday night. She normally takes an auto and then walks to her house. On Thursday night, she alighted at the Red Hills–Tiruvallur road and started walking to her house.

As she was walking in front of a poorly-lit burial ground, she was intercepted by two masked men. They allegedly threatened her with knives and asked her to part with her cash and mobile phone. When she cried out for help and resisted their attempts, the men picked her up, gagged her and took off with her seated in between them on their motorbike.

A passer-by, who saw Martha being abducted, immediately alerted the police, who launched a search operation to track the woman. Martha, meanwhile, was dumped on the Vandalur-Minjur Outer Ring Road, around three kilometres from her house, after the thieves took her phone and Rs 3,500 cash she had with her. While the police were searching for her, her relatives received her call. Martha had borrowed the cell phone of a passer-by on the Outer Ring Road and had called up her relatives, informing them of her ordeal and the spot where she was left. She was then taken home by her relatives.

The police said that the young man, who had alerted them, had allegedly lost his cell phone to the two men just a few minutes before Martha was intercepted. He had set out in search of them when he saw them abduct Martha. The police have registered an FIR and are on the lookout for the men.
