A 30-year-old man, R Thangaraj from Sirumugai Road near Karamadai in Coimbatore chopped off the hand of his friend, P Sujatha, while arguing with her over a relationship. Sujatha who hails from Chinnathottipalayam near Karamadai has been admitted at a private hospital for reconstructive surgery.
Thangaraj then surrendered at the Karamadai Police Station on Monday along with the severed palm. The quarrel that turned violent took place after Thangaraj found out that Sujatha was seeing someone else.
According to The Hindu, Sujatha has been working in the housekeeping section of a private hospital in Mettupalayam and was living alone since the demise of her husband a few years ago.
Thangaraj who worked as a mason was allegedly in a relationship with Sujatha. Reports state that an armed Thangaraj had confronted Sujatha, who had been avoiding him off late, at her house. Their heated argument turned violent when Thangaraj used a sickle to attack Sujatha.
In an attempt to protect her head, Sujatha had raised her left arm and in the impact the sickle severed her hand near the wrist. Neighbours, upon hearing Sujatha’s cries, rushed her to government Mettupalayam hospital. She was later shifted to a private hospital.
Soon after this incident, Thangaraj surrendered at the police station along with her severed palm. The police have said that the palm was immediately taken to the private hospital in the city where Sujatha has now been admitted for a reconstructive surgery.
Thangaraj is currently remanded in Coimbatore Central Prison
Hand transplants fall under a category of surgeries called ‘reconstructive transplants.’ Such procedures are undertaken for tissues in the body which retain a good blood supply following an injury or accident. While prosthetics are an option for some people, experts say that in some cases it is more favourable to opt for a hand transplant as the person is able to regain complete use of their limbs and sensations, unlike with prosthetics.
