Cloudy sky with light rains predicted for Chennai in coming days

Cloudy weather is expected to continue in Chennai city with the Met Department predicting light rain in some areas. The bulletin issued at 9 pm on Saturday from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai said, “The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Light rain is likely to occur in some areas.” 

Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 35 and 28 degree Celsius respectively on Monday while Tuesday’s maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 36 and 29 degree Celsius respectively. Light to moderate rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tamil Nadu over the next four days.

Meanwhile, making its main weather observations for the country, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) stated, “Yesterday, the highest maximum temperature of 38.8°C was recorded at Madurai (Tamilnadu).” 

“The cyclonic circulation over northwest Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood extending upto 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting southwestwards with height persists. Under its influence a low pressure area likely to form during next 2-3 days,” the IMD observed.

City-based weather blogger Pradeep John who runs the popular Facebook page Tamil Nadu Weatherman noted that areas of the city and its suburbs which escaped rain on Sunday may stand a chance on Monday. “Those areas which missed today have chance tomorrow. Daily evening/early nights we have chance. Not the damal dumeel types. Lets hope North Chennai and its suburb get some rains tomorrow. Its been south Chennai show all along this July,” he wrote.

Chennai has recorded 56% above normal rain since June 1, recording 247.5 millimetres of rainfall from June 1 to July 27. The normal rainfall that Chennai is expected to receive every year from the southwest monsoon is 159.1 mm. According to a report in the Times of India, Nungambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 34.1 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 28 degrees Celsius. While there were no rains over the weekend, the weather was pleasant across the city.
