No end to our friendship: Kamal pens moving tribute to Crazy Mohan

Even as legions of Tamil cinema fans mourned the loss of beloved actor and comedy writer Crazy Mohan, his closest collaborator and fellow actor Kamal Haasan penned a moving letter to his late friend. Crazy Mohan passed away at Kauvery Hospital in Chennai on Monday, after suffering an acute heart attack. Soon after the news of his death was confirmed, fans everywhere recalled their favourite memories of writer-actor’s cherished performances. Inevitably, his best work was produced in collaboration with actor Kamal Haasan.

Crazy Mohan had often recalled in interviews that Kamal had terrific comic timing. The actor, in turn, had credited Mohan’s invaluable contributions to cult comic classics like Aboorva Sagodharargal, Michael Madana Kama Rajan, Sathi Leelavathi, Thenali, Panchathanthiram, Kadhala Kadhala, Avvai Shanmugi, Vasool Raja MBBS and Pammal K Sambantham. He had also written Shankar’s hit anti-corruption film Indian, which starred Kamal in dual roles.

Full text of Kamal’s letter:

Amongst the things that I envy my friend Crazy Mohan for, the most important is his child-like heart. Not everyone gets it. Many, in the name of learning worldliness lose this wonderful quality. ‘Crazy’ is a title that suits him. He is a “genius comedian”.

The truth is that he lowered the levels of his talents, and remained populist to always please the crowd.

Under many circumstances he’s taken the place of (my siblings) Charuhasan, Chandrahasan, Mohanhasan to express his love.

As a mark of that friendship today, along with his brother Balaji, I placed my hand on his forehead and we bade him farewell.

Friendship has no end. Is friendship present only with the presence of the person? Mohan’s comedy will live through his fans, and I too will stand in support of that life.

His family is wonderful. No matter how much I express my condolences, (the loss) will not heal, will not be enough.

I wish them mental strength to bear and get used to this loss.

With love,

Kamal Haasan
