NEET results: 2 MBBS aspirants end their lives in TN

Even as the results of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) were announced on Wednesday, two medical aspirants from Tamil Nadu ended their lives over their performance in the exams. According to reports, Ritushree of from Tirupur district did not clear the exams and Vaishya from Pattukottai in Thanjavur district had scored less than what she had expected.

According to one report in The Hindu, Ritushree’s parents told media persons that their daughter had been bold, brave and ambitious, suspecting that she had taken her life due to her NEET performance. Ritushree’s body had been sent for a post mortem and a police case has been registered.

NEET has had a contentious relationship with Tamil Nadu ever since it was introduced as a qualifying examination for undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses in the country. The state had advocated against the one size fits all test that homogenises students who fall under various examination boards in the country. Two years ago, the suicide of Dalit student Anitha, who spearheaded the fight against the NEET exam, had shaken Tamil Nadu. She had been one of the first petitioners seeking an exemption for Tamil Nadu from the examination.

According to another report in The Hindu, DMK chief and Leader of the Opposition MK Stalin slammed the Centre, reiterating that the state must be exempt from NEET. Stating that the newly-elected DMK MPs would raise the issue in Parliament, he reportedly blamed the government under PM Modi of ‘watching in silence and arrogance the continuing suicides in the state due to the introduction of NEET.’

Wednesday’s results saw Tamil Nadu put up a better performance than the previous year. However, no student from Tamil Nadu made it to the top 50 list. The state posted a pass percentage of 48.57.
