Relief for parts of Tamil Nadu as IMD predicts rainfall

The state of Tamil Nadu may witness some much-needed respite from the soaring Mercury levels with the Indian Meteorological Department forecasting light to moderate rain to occur over few places in Tamil Nadu during the next four days. According to the bulletin issued by IMD, heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places over Tamil Nadu on June 6 and 7.

The forecast for Tuesday, June 4, reads that thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds at 40-50 kmph along with lightning is likely to occur at isolated places in Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Theni, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Tiruchirapalli districts. On June 6 and 7 too, thunderstorms with gusty winds and lightning have been predicted over isolated areas in the state.

As for Chennai and its neighbourhood, the sky is likely to be partly cloudy with maximum and minimum temperatures around 39 and 29 degree Celsius respectively for the next 48 hours.

While South-West monsoon is set to begin on June 6 in Kerala, after a delay of five days from its usual onset of June 1, the temperature in Chennai has been above 40 degree Celsius for the past three days (since June 1).

On June 3, a heatwave warning was issued for Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Madurai and Tirunelveli districts in Tamil Nadu with maximum temperature above normal by 2 to 4 degree Celsius.

As of 8.30 am on June 4, Chennai airport (40.8), Cuddalore (40), Madurai South (41), Thanjavur (40) and Tiruttani (41) are the places that have crossed 40 degree Celsius.

As of June 4, Kariyapatti in Virudhunagar district has recorded the maximum amount of rainfall at 6 cm. Chengam in Tiruvannamalai and Karaikudi in Sivaganga have recorded 3 cm rainfall each, while RK Pet in Tiruvallur and Sathanur Dam in Tiruvannamalai have recorded 2 cms of rainfall each.
