India condemns serial blasts in Sri Lanka, assures support

India has strongly condemned the serial blasts at multiple locations in Sri Lanka on Sunday morning in which 160 people have been killed and over 400 injured.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to the people and Government of Sri Lanka. We wish a speedy recovery to those injured in the attacks,” New Delhi said in a statement.

India has always opposed and rejected terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, and has urged concerted action by the global community against terrorism, including cross-border terrorism. There can be no justification whatsoever for any act of terror, the statement read.

Multiple explosions hit three churches and three high-end hotels this morning in and around the capital city of Colombo during Easter Mass.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condemned the attack on the hotels and churches on Easter and said such “barbarism has no place in the region” in a tweet.

“We call for the perpetrators of such ghastly and heinous acts and those who provide them support to be brought to justice expeditiously,” the statement read.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj expressed concern about the situation unfolding in the island nation. “I am in constant touch with the Indian High Commissioner in Colombo. We are keeping a close watch on the situation,” Swaraj said in a tweet.

The Indian government assured the neighbouring country and its people of unstinted support during the sudden crisis which had hit Sri Lanka in the midst of Easter celebrations.
