EOW officer commits suicide

Satish Chandra Shukla, an inspector posted with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) in Varanasi, allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the New Yamuna Bridge, in the wee hours of Saturday, police said.

The body was fished out by divers in the morning and sent for post mortem, police said.

He is survived by his wife Mamta and two sons, Prananjay and Saujanya, who reside in Madhwapur area, besides a married daughter, Pragya, said Kydganj SHO Anjani Kumar Srivastava.

He said the family members were unable to explain the reason for the inspector taking the extreme step and no suicide note was recovered. However, family members did say that he seemed tense for the past few days, the SHO added.

Having penned many books, the inspector was honoured by Governor in 2015 and was believed to have been unhappy with his posting in EOW.

Police said after having dinner he went to sleep and at around 3 am, his son Saujanya, found him missing. His wallet and mobile phone was on the bed itself. The family members then launched a search for him and his sons found his slippers on the New Yamuna Bridge. They then informed the police.

He was set to retire in January 2020.
