63-year-old man from Erode dies of cardiac arrest while waiting to cast his vote

A 63-year-old man from Tamil Nadu’s Erode district died of a cardiac arrest while waiting to cast his vote on Thursday morning. The man has been identified as Murugesan S, a resident of Sivagiri in Erode.

Murugesan was waiting in line at the Government Boys Higher Secondary School polling station in Sivagiri when he fainted. Voters nearby tried to help him and he was rushed to Sivagiri Government Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. The cause of his death has been determined to be a cardiac arrest. His body is currently at the hospital.

Voting began at 7 am on Thursday in Tamil Nadu. The Election Commission had cancelled polling in the Vellore Lok Sabha constituency on Tuesday after the Income Tax Department (IT) seized unaccounted cash from a warehouse allegedly belonging to the relative of a DMK functionary.

In Tamil Nadu as of 11 am, the voter turnout was at 10.21 percent.

Polling is also taking place in the central and southern regions of the state of Karnataka. Udupi-Chikmagalur, Hassan, Dakshina Kannada, Chitradurga (SC), Tumkur, Mandya, Mysore, Chamarajnagar (SC), Bangalore Rural, Bangalore North, Bangalore Central, Bangalore South, Chikkaballapur and Kolar (SC) are the constituencies wherein polling is happening on Thursday. As of Thursday at 11 am, voter turnout in the state is at 10.12 percent.

Counting of votes will take place on May 23.
