‘Modi using EC to ruin elections’: MK Stalin on I-T searches at Kanimozhi’s residence

DMK Working President MK Stalin lashed out at the Centre, accusing it of “murdering democracy” as a team of 10 Income Tax officials swooped down on the residence of his sister and the DMK’s Thoothukudi candidate Kanimozhi on Tuesday evening.

He demanded to know why members of the Opposition party are being targeted when there are charges against AIADMK and BJP leaders as well. He added that this was an indication that the AIADMK and BJP are afraid of failure.

“It’s a murder of democracy. In Theni, where Deputy CM O Paneerselvam’s son Ravindranath is contesting from, there is proof that Rs 1,000 has been given to each voter. Has action been taken against him? Narendra Modi is using the Election Commission against the DMK. What happened to the raids at minister Velumani’s benami house? No one knows. Crores and crores of rupees are kept in Tamilisai Soundararajan’s residence, why no raids there? Modi is using the I-T, CBI, judiciary and now the Election Commission to interfere in elections. They want to somehow ruin these elections,” MK Stalin said to the reporters in Trichy.

Alleging that only Opposition leaders are being targeted in the country, Stalin also called for reforms in the Election Commission.

“Modi is using the I-T, CBI, judiciary and now the Election Commission to interfere in elections. They want to somehow ruin these elections,” Stalin added.

The searches at Kanimozhi’s residence came shortly after the Election Commission announced that the Lok Sabha election to Vellore has been cancelled and with just over a day to go for the polls. The residence where the searches happened has been rented by Kanimozhi ahead of her campaign in the district.

As the searches were on, DMK supporters gathered at Kanimozhi’s residence and staged protests against the Central government.
