Building a toilet at home proved costly for a Dalit family in Madhya Pradesh after the community boycotted them and asked them to leave the locality.

The community members even threatened the family of dire consequences if they failed to move out of the locality.

Sitaram Vanshkar, a resident of Premsagar colony in Jabalpur, had recently built a toilet inside his home. As the community head Mukesh Vanshkar got the news, he landed at Sitaram’s home along with others and asked him to leave the colony.

Mukesh claimed that building a toilet inside home was against community tradition. He asked the family to dismantle the loo and move out of the locality.

The community head even got them boycotted and their neighbours stopped interacting to them following the diktat.

Sitaram, a man of progressive mindset, earns his livlihood by working as labourer. His three daughters and son are pursuing higher studies. The family is hassled these days as no one in the area talks to them.

However, one of Sitaram’s daughters has now approached district administration against the social discrimination.

Additional Collector Surendra Kathuria confirmed that a girl has met him with the complaint of social boycott. Officers concerned in the area have been asked to probe into the complaint. If the complaint is found true, the guilty would be punished, he said.
