In MP village, tribal woman caned, forced to carry husband on shoulders

A woman was beaten with a cane and forced to carry her husband on her shoulder around the village to allegedly atone for having an extra-marital affair, following the diktat of a tribal panchayat in Jhabua district, situated some 340 km west of Bhopal, the police said.

The incident took place in Devigarh village on Friday but its video turned viral on social media on Saturday, alerting the officials in the district headquarters.

A case has been registered against a dozen villagers under Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation) and other IPC sections.

According to Jhabua SP Vineet Jain, the victim, a resident of Bhimpuri village was married to a youth of Devigarh village sometime back. But, she eloped with another youth of Talawali village. When she returned home, her in-laws took her to the tribal panchayat which announced the punishment. While she was carrying her husband, the entire village followed and mocked her, while some of them took videos of the incident.

“We are identifying the accused from the video and they will be arrested soon,” SP Jain said.
