845 candidates to contest in Tamil Nadu as per final list released by ECI

A total of 845 candidates will be contesting from 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu, according to the final tally announced by  Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo.

The Election Commission of India released the final number of candidates contesting from each constituency for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and Tamil Nadu assembly bye-polls on Friday. The ECI had given time till 3 pm on Friday for the candidates to withdraw their nominations for the elections scheduled to be held on April 18.

Of the total 845 candidates, 779 are male, 65 are female and one is trans gender candidate.

Similarly, for the bye-polls in 18 Tamil Nadu assembly constituencies, a total of 269 candidates have been announced in the final list.

According to the data shared by the CEO, Karur Lok Sabha constituency will see the highest number of candidates contesting for the polls with 42 candidates. Nilgiris constituency will have 10 candidates contesting from it, making it the least in the state.

Similarly, for the assembly bye-elections, Gudiyatham assembly constituency will have the lowest number of candidates at seven and Perambur will have the highest candidates for the bye-polls at 40.

Cash and gold seizure

According to the data of the ECI as on March 29, the officials across Tamil Nadu have seized 72.94 crore cash since the Model Code of Conduct came into force. The quantity of gold and silver seized till Friday stood at 608 kilograms collectively worth Rs 74.47 crore. While the quantity of gold seized is 261 kilograms, silver seized stood at 346.7 kilograms.

According to the ECI data, Tamil Nadu still remained at the top spot in the total value of restricted items seized in the run up to the elections as on Friday worth Rs 153.32 crore apart from Gujarat, which saw drugs worth Rs 500 crore seized.
