CRPF constable killed wife for stopping him from going on election duty: Police

A constable of CRPF’s CoBRA battalion in Chhattisgarh’s Jagdalpur killed his wife after she reportedly tried to stop him from going on Lok Sabha election duty, police have said.

The constable of the Central Reserve Police Force’s elite Commando Battalion for Resolute Action tried to pass off the murder as a suicide and has been arrested, according to officials.

“Constable Guruveer Singh, who lived in the headquarters of CRPF’s 201 CoBRA battalion, had strangled his wife Anupriya Gautam at the government quarters,” Jagdalpur’s superintendent of police Hemsagar Sidar said on Tuesday.

Sidar said the couple had an argument on March 16 over Singh going for election duty in Bijapur district after which Singh then strangled his wife. The senior official said the constable then informed Nagarnar Police that his wife had committed suicide and tried to mislead them.

However, the post-mortem report and evidence gathered during the investigation showed the cracks in Singh’s story. He was interrogated and during which he confessed to the crime, police said.

Jagdalpur is in Bastar district of the Maoist-affected state and the Lok Sabha election will be held on April 11. The result will be declared on May 23.
