Among the five dead in the overbridge collapse near Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus were two nurses who were on their way to a hospital.

Ranajana Tambe (40) and Apurva Prabhu (35) were nurses at GT hospital and had been working since 2005, said nurses at the GT hospital said.

Incidentally, several of the injured in the collapse were taken to GT hospital.

Both the nurses, who were on their way for night shift, were from Dombivili. Ranaja Tambe was a nurse in ward 6 and Apurva Prabhu was a nurse in the operation theatre. Prabhu is survived by her husband and two children, the nurses said.

Zahid Shiraj Khan (32), Bhakti Shinde (40) and Tapendra Singh (35) were the others who died in the collapse.

At least five persons were killed and 33 others injured after a portion of the concrete slab of a key foot over bridge (FOB) connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to a school on the busy Dadabhai Naoroji Road in south Mumbai collapsed on Thursday at around 7.35 pm.

Witnesses said nothing was visible for the first few minutes after the overbridge collapsed at around 7.30 pm on Thursday evening.

“We heard a loud sound and rushed near the bridge. For the first two minutes, we could not see anything as there was dust everywhere. Few minutes later, we saw nearly 15 people severely injured after having fallen from the bridge,” he said.

Railways and BMC will jointly conduct an inquiry into the incident, state minister Vinod Tawde said after reaching the site.

Mumbai police have issued directions for traffic diversions, asking commuters to avoid CSMT and Crawford Market road.

Fire brigade and disaster management officials reached the spot and carried out rescue operations.

The Chattrapati Shivaji terminus, earlier known as the Victoria terminus, is one of the busiest railway stations in the country.
