“Railways and the BMC will jointly conduct an inquiry into the incident. The bridge was not considered dilapidated but some minor repairs were to be conducted. It will be probed why it was not shut for commuters,” said state minister Vinod Tawde.

“There were more than 20 people on the bridge when a part of it collapsed. I saw one person who was crying for help and I took him to GT hospital. He was a worker at the Metro Construction site near Azad Maidan,” said Lahu Kurhade, an eyewitness to the incident,

‘Saw nearly 15 people severely injured who had fallen from the bridge’: Passerby

“We heard a loud sound and rushed near the bridge. For first two minutes, we could not see anything as there was dust everywhere. Few minutes later, we saw nearly 15 people severely injured who had fallen from the bridge. Me and my friends took 4 people to GT hospital. I saw three women on the road that were completely unresponsive and took them to the hospital.” said 30-year-old Imran Khan, a passerby.

20 people injured: BMC disaster management team

According to the BMC’s disaster manangement team, 20 people were injured in the incident. Ten have been admitted to GT hospital and six in St George Hospital.
