4 dead, 34 injured as foot overbridge collapses near Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus…

Four people died and 34 were injured when a portion of a foot overbridge collapsed on Thursday evening near Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai.

Police control room said Apoorva Prabhu (35), Ranjana Tambe (40) and Zahid Shiraj Khan (32) had died in the Mumbai foot overbridge collapse. Officials said many people were injured in the incident. Eleven have been admitted to GT hospital and 17 in St George Hospital. Dr Madhukar Gaikwad, medical superintendent of St George Hospital, said one of those admitted to the hospital had died. The incident took place during the evening rush hour, around 7.30pm. Some motorists who were passing beneath the bridge when it came down, news agency PTI quoted an official as saying.

Maharashtra minister Vinod Tawde said the bridge was not considered dilapidated but some minor repairs were to be conducted. “Will probe why it was not shut for commuters,” he said. Tawde added that the railways and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will jointly conduct an inquiry into the incident.

“Foot overbridge connecting CST platform 1 north end with B T Lane near Times of India building has collapsed. Injured persons are being shifted to hospitals. Traffic affected. Commuters to use alternate routes. Senior officers are on spot,” Mumbai Police tweeted.

Ministry of Railways said the bridge was under the jurisdiction of the BMC, ANI reported. Railway doctors and personnel are cooperating with BMC in relief and rescue operations.

Fire brigade and disaster management officials are at the spot and rescue operations are underway.

The Chattrapati Shivaji terminus, earlier known as the Victoria terminus, is one of the busiest railway stations in the country.
