2nd ODI: Marsh out for 16; Australia 3 down

19:40  Maxwell out for 4; Australia 4 down:

Maxwell drives Shami through the off-side for one before the pacer bowls a wide down the leg side to Handscomb, who then drives the next through the covers for one.

Jadeja follows it up with a tight over, giving away just a single, in his seventh.

Change in the bowling as Kuldeep comes back, taking over from Shami.

Handscomb is beaten by some turn and hit on the pads but the LBW appeal is turned down before he sweeps the next for two runs and then takes one.

Maxwell is then beaten as he tries to play the defensive shot as Dhoni again whips off the bails and appeals for stumping which is turned down by the TV umpire.

Maxwell keeps strike with a single from the last ball to long-on.

India are aware if Maxwell gets settled then it will be difficult to get themselves back in the match.

And they bring back their premier strike bowler Bumrah back into the attack.

Maxwell turns the third ball on the leg side for one as he prefers to play to the match situation and not trying anything fancy.

Kuldeep strikes with the big wicket of Maxwell, who looks to pull a short ball, but misses and is bowled for four. He went right back to hit it over midwicket but the ball was quicker and also stayed a bit low.

Marcus Stoinis gets off the mark with a single followed by another couple of singles off the last two balls.

A desperate India bring back Shami into the attack as he replaces Kuldeep, who has bowled four overs so far.

Two singles before Handscomb drills a full delivery straight down the ground for a four and then takes one off the last ball.

India continue to juggle with their bowlers as Jadeja replaces Jadhav. India need to bring their fielders inside the circle and make the batsmen take some risks.

So far, the field is well spread around and Australia have been able to pick the singles at regular intervals as they easily pick four singles off Jadeja.

The right-left combination is working wonders for Australia as the regular singles ensure that the bowlers are not able to settle into any particular line for the two batsmen.

Even Shami fails to make an impact as Australia collect four runs from his fifth over, including a leg bye.

Jadeja gets some sharp turn as Handscomb is beaten trying to defend and Dhoni whips off the bails in a flash and appeals for stumping which is turned down after it is referred to the third umpire.

He then easily drives the next ball down to long-on for one.

Marsh tries to clip Jadeja across the line and is hit on the pads but the LBW appeal is turned down.

A lucky break for India as Marsh is caught down the leg side by Dhoni as he tries to glance Jadeja fine. He is given out by the umpire Nitin Menon and he decides against taking the review as he walks back for 16.

Shaun Marsh gets a thick outside edge which goes past the slip region for two runs followed by three singles as they collect six from the Kuldeep over.

Marsh and Handscomb looking to work the spinners in the gap and keep the scoreboard ticking with ones and twos.

Three singles from five balls before Handscomb runs a wide delivery past short thirdman for two runs followed by three more singles.

India have dried up the boundaries but Australia keep the runs coming in ones and twos as Handscomb and Marsh bat sensibly in the middle overs with the field well spread around.

Jadhav has started off well, giving away just nine runs in his three overs, while picking up a wicket but India need wickets in the middle overs to bring themselves back in the contest.

Australia have gone past the 100-run mark, in the 19th over, and they face no pressure with asking rate under five at the moment.

Three singles from the first three balls before Marsh drills a wide half-volley but Jadeja manages to stop it in the covers before he takes a quick run next ball and Handscomb does the same last ball.

India are comfortably placed on 106 for two in 20 overs, with Marsh on 12 and Handscomb on 11. They need another 145 runs for victory in 30 overs at an asking rate of 4.8

One wicket leads to another. Jadhav replaces Jadeja and he claims the key wicket of Khawaja, who gets a leading edge and is caught in the covers by captain Kohli for 38.

The two openers have fallen in the space of seven deliveries as Australia are reduced to 86 for two in 16 overs.

Shaun Marsh and Peter Handscomb will need to stitch together a partnership by rotating the strike and not let the spinners take control in the middle overs.

18:42  Kuldeep strikes; Finch out for 37:

Khawaja does well to stay back and guide a wide delivery from Jadeja through the vacant slip region for a four.

He misses the sweep but the ball is ruled a wide down the leg side before Khawaja turns the last ball on the leg side for two runs.

Spin from both ends as Kuldeep Yadav comes into the attack. He also starts his spell with a wide down the leg side before Finch slog sweeps the next ball over midwicket for a six to make his intent clear.

Finch is then beaten outside the off-stump before Kuldeep appeals for leg before next ball but it is turned down.

Jadeja has been expensive, going for 19 runs in three overs, before he makes way for Kedar Jadhav.

He starts off with a tidy over, starting off with five dot balls in a row to Finch, who takes a single off the last ball to keep strike.

The two left-arm spinners swap ends as Jadeja comes in from the other end. He bowls a tidy over, giving away just four singles in his fourth over.

Change of ends works for Kuldeep, as he makes the breakthrough with the wicket of Finch. The Australia captain, who made 37 from 53 balls, goes for the sweep but misses and is given out leg before wicket. He has a chat with his partner Khawaja but decides against taking the review.

18:25  Khawaja, Finch give Australia a flying start:

India introduce spin early as Ravindra Jadeja comes into the attack. He gets one to turn big as Finch is beaten completely trying to defend.

The Australia captain watchfully defends the rest of the over as Jadeja concedes just a single in his first over.

Khawaja looking in good touch. He makes most as Bumrah strays on the pads, hitting it through the leg side for a four and then takes one off the fifth ball.

Khawaja growing in confidence. He decides to take on Jadeja, hitting him with the spin over the midwicket region for a four.

Jadeja immediately switches to round the wicket and Khawaja manages to nudge it on the leg side for one.

Jadeja then strays on the pads as Finch is able to help it fine on the leg side for another four.

A change in the bowling as all-rounder Vijay Shankar replaces Bumrah, who bowled four overs for 19 runs in his first spell.

He starts with a poor delivery, on the pads to Khawaja, who clips it fine for a four and then takes one.

Shankar then gifts Finch a full toss which he hits straight down the ground for a four and he steers the next ball fine on the off-side for another boundary.

Australia in control as the openers put on 60 runs in 10 overs, with Finch on 26 and Khawaja on 28.

18:08  Australia off to a quick start after India post 250:

Khawaja pokes at a wide delivery from Bumrah and is beaten before he plays and misses again as the ball stays low.

Khawaja then nudges the third ball on the leg side for one to get off strike before Finch is also beaten outside the off-stump.

He throws his bat at the last ball, which is wide, and gets a thick outside edge which flies past the slip fielder and goes for a four.

A good over from Shami as he gives away just two runs in his third over, including a wide.

Bumrah drops short as Khawaja pulls it over midwicket for a four but is beaten all ends up next ball as it stays quite low. He was lucky that the ball was not in line else he would have been in trouble.

Khawaja tries to flick the next ball but misses and picks up a leg bye as Australia reach 32 for no loss in six overs.

17:56  Australia off to a quick start after India post 250:

The in-form Mohammed Shami to open the bowling for India, who will be looking to pick up a few early wickets with the new ball.

On the other hand, Australia’s openers Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja will be looking to get their team off to a flying start, with the pitch expected to get difficult for batting later on.

Shami starts the innings with a wide down the leg side to Finch, who flicks the next ball to fine leg for one to get off the mark.

Shami again drifts on the pads to left-hander Khawaja, who clips it square on the leg side for two runs and then glances the last ball fine on the leg side for a four to get eight from the first over.

Just like Shami, Jasprit Bumrah also starts his spell with a wide. He gets it right next ball, pitching it perfectly with some amount of away movement to beat right-hander Finch, who plays away from his body.

Bumrah bowls another wide before he produces another beauty to beat Finch all ends up, outside the off-stump.

Finch then clips the next ball through midwicket for three runs as Jadhav does well to stop the boundary with a timely dive near the ropes.

Shami bowls another wide down the leg side to Finch, who then drives the next ball through the covers for a four.

He then clips Shami through square for two runs but offers no shot to the last ball as the bowler goes wide.

17:04  Kohli hits century but Australia limit India to 250:

image
India 250-all out (48.2 ovs) vs Aus | Scorecard

Captain Virat Kohli hit a century but Pat Cummins picked up four wickets to help Australia restrict India to 250, in the second ODI in Nagpur.

Kohli led the way with a fluent 116 to rally India after a few early wickets but Australia kept chipping away at the wickets in the middle overs to keep the hosts in check.

Kohli put on 81 runs for the fourth wicket with Vijay Shankar, who made a quickfire 46. But the Tamil Nadu all-rounder’s unfortunate dismissal through run at the non-striker’s end after Adam Zampa deflected a straight drive from Kohli into the stumps, affected India’s momentum.

Zampa then left India in further strife with wickets off successive deliveries — as Kedar Jadhav (11) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (0) perished cheaply.

India never really recovered from that double strike and despite Kohli hitting his 40th ODI century, he failed to get the required support from the other end.

Cummins registered wonderful figures of four for 29 in nine overs, while Zampa picked up two for 62.

The pitch is expected to offer some turn in the second half and India would fancy their chances of defending this total.

India’s batsmen struggled at the end. They were 204 for six in 40 overs, and managed just 46 runs while losing their last four wickets in 8.2 overs before they were bowled out.

16:56  Australia bowl out India for 250:

India 250-all out (48.2 ovs) vs Aus | Scorecard

Cummins picks the big wicket of Kohli, who looks to flick it uppishly on the leg side but ends up getting caught at deep square leg.

Kohli walks back after a superb innings of 116 from 120 balls, having hit 10 fours.

His wicket is a huge blow for India, who were looking at their captain to bat till the end and hit some boundaries in the last couple of overs.

The impressive Cummins claims another wicket in the over. Kuldeep shuffles across a long way but misses a full delivery and is bowled for 3.

Coulter-Nile finishes off India’s innings in the next over as Jasprit Bumrah is bowled off an inside edge as the hosts are bowled out for 250, in 48.2 overs.
