2nd ODI: Kohli out for 116; India 8 down

Cummins picks the big wicket of Kohli, who looks to flick it uppishly on the leg side but ends up getting caught at deep square leg.

Kohli walks back after a superb innings of 116 from 120 balls, having hit 10 fours.

His wicket is a huge blow for India, who were looking at their captain to bat till the end and hit some boundaries in the last couple of overs.

The impressive Cummins claims another wicket in the over. Kuldeep shuffles across a long way but misses a full delivery and is bowled for 3.

Coulter-Nile finishes off India’s innings in the next over as Jasprit Bumrah is bowled off an inside edge as the hosts are bowled out for 250, in 48.2 overs.

16:45  Jadeja out for 21; India 7 down:  

Zampa comes back into the attack. He is unlucky not to pick up a wicket as Stoinis at deep midwicket puts down a simple catch after Jadeja, on 15, had pulled a short ball but failed to put it in the gap.

With five overs remaining, India will look to hit a few boundaries and look for a 275-plus total.

But Jadeja fails to make most of the lifeline. He falls in the next over, caught at mid-off for 21, trying to hit pacer Cummins down the ground. The change of pace deceived Jadeja completely and he ended up miscuing his intended lofted shot.

With just three wickets left, Kohli will need to take majority of the strike and score as much as possible.

Zampa continues as Kohli flicks it in the gap through midwicket for a four using the bottom hand to good effect. He then clips the next ball on the leg side for one to bring Kuldeep Yadav on strike.

Kuldeep sweeps a full delivery to fine leg for one to get off the mark and Kohli drives the fifth ball uppishly to sweeper cover for a single.

Kuldeep clips the last ball square and Kohli pushes him for the second which helps him keep the strike for the next over.

16:32  Kohli hits 40th ODI century:  

Maxwell doing a good job with the ball, going at just four per over and Australia continue with him.

A single to Jadeja helps him complete the grand double of 2000 runs and 150 wickets in ODIs.

Another tidy over from Maxwell, who has conceded five singles in his ninth over.

Pacer Coulter-Nile is back into the attack. Four singles from five balls before Kohli drives the last ball through the covers for three runs.

Maxwell bowls another tidy over to end his spell and finish with good figures one for 45 in 10 overs.

In the next over, Kohli cuts a short ball from Coulter-Nile over point for a four to raise his century, his 40th in ODIs, from 107 deliveries.

16:18  Kohli hits half-century to rally India:  

Australia bring their fast bowler back as Cummins is called back into the attack. Jadeja picks a single off the second ball before Kohli slashes a wide delivery through point for a four and then takes one.

Kohli and Jadeja doing well to pick five singles from Maxwell’s eighth over as India go past the 200-run mark, in the 39th over.

Kohli, on 86, gets a lifeline as he hits it straight to Maxwell at point and sets off for a quick single. However, the fielder misses with the direct hit with Kohli struggling to make his crease.

And Kohli eventually gets the run courtesy of an overthrow before Jadeja runs the next ball to thirdman for one.

Another single for Kohli to take India to 204 for six in 40 overs.

16:05  Zampa’s double strike leaves India in trouble:  

Kohli flicks Lyon square on the leg side for two runs and then takes one to fine leg.

Jadeja is then beaten as he comes forward to defend but misses and the wicketkeeper whips off the bails in a flash before he appeals for stumping which is referred to the TV umpire. Jadeja has managed to drag his feet back in the crease and he survives the stumping appeal.

Jadeja then taps Lyon on the off-side for one and Kohli nudges the last ball fine on the leg side for another single.

Part-time spinner Maxwell, who bowled five overs in his first spell early on, comes back.

A single to Kohli and Jadeja before the former drives a full delivery through the covers for two runs.

The India captain comes down the track and flicks the last ball to long-on for one to keep strike as the hosts reach 181 for six in 35 overs, with Kohli unbeaten on 74 from 81 balls.

Australia’s spinners trying to bowl a lot of dot balls to Jadeja and put some pressure on Kohli at the other end.

Kohli hits Lyon to sweeper cover for one before the spinner bowls three dots in a row to Jadeja, who manages to pick two runs off the last ball.

Maxwell starts his seventh over with a leg side wide to Kohli, who turns the second ball to midwicket for a single.

Jadeja offers no shot to a wide delivery before he picks one on the off-side.

Maxwell bowls a leg side wide to Kohli, who clips the last ball through midwicket where the fielder does well to run to his left and put in the slide to keep it down to two.

15:52  Dhoni and Jadhav perish; India 6 down:  

Kedar Jadhav comes in at No. 6 as Dhoni is held back. He gets off the mark with a single off Lyon on the leg side and Kohli also does the same next ball.

Jadhav then cuts a short ball past point for three runs before he tries to pull but can’t beat the fielder on the leg side.

In the leggie’s next over, Jadhav attempts the sweep which takes the bottom edge and goes between the wicketkeeper’s legs for a four.

However, he perishes off the very next delivery as hits a flighted delivery from Zampa straight into the hands of the fielder in the cover to perish for 11.

Dhoni falls off the very next delivery for a duck as he looks to run a wide delivery from Zampa to thirdman but he ends up getting caught by Usman Khawaja in the slips.

India in a bit of trouble as they slip to 171 for six in the 33rd over.

India nearly lose another wicket as new batsman Ravindra Jadeja gets an edge but it falls short of the slip fielder.

15:42  Shankar run out for 46; India lose 4th wicket:  

A single to Shankar to fine leg off Lyon and Kohli turns the next on the leg side to raise the 50-run stand for the fourth wicket from as many deliveries.

Shankar keeps strike with a single from the last ball as three runs come from the over.

Medium pacer Marcus Stoinis comes into the attack. A single each to Shankar and Kohli before the former pulls a short ball over midwicket for a four.

The next ball is down the leg side as Shankar misses the glance but it hits the pads and gone fine for two leg byes.

The last ball is short as Shankar pull it over midwicket and this time it goes all the way for a six as 14 come from the over.

The runs are coming freely at the moment. Kohli goes right back and steers Lyon fine on the off-side for a four and then takes one and Shankar picks a single off the fifth ball.

Shankar looking to take on the bowlers now. Zampa comes back into the attack and Shankar lofts the first ball back over the bowler’s head for a four before taking a single off the next.

He bowls another overpitched delivery as Kohli manages to crash it through the covers for another four.

Kohli then hammers the next ball straight as Zampa gets a touch on his follow through and the ball deflects on to the stumps to run out Shankar, who had backed out of his crease trying to look for a run.

An unfortunate end to Shankar’s good knock, he made 46 from 41 balls and promised a lot more before he was run out.

15:15  Kohli hits 50th fifty in ODIs to boost India:  

Coulter-Nile comes back into the attack, replacing Lyon, who bowled a short first spell of two overs, in which he picked up a wicket.

Coulter-Nile starts with a loosener with a wide short delivery which Shankar crashes in the gap between covers and point for a four to take India past the 100 in the 21st over and then takes a quick single off the next.

The fast bowler then bowls a half volley on the pads which Kohli clips but straight to the fielder at fine leg on the bounce for one.

Lyon comes back into the attack. Kohli takes a single from the third ball before Shankar defends the rest of the over, which goes for just one.

Coulter-Nile comes back well with a tight over as he concedes just three singles in his fifth over.

Lyon drifts down the leg side as Shankar glances it fine for a boundary followed by three singles as the scoreboard keeps ticking.

Shankar growing in confidence as he drives a half-volley from Coulter-Nile straight down the ground past mid-on for a four and then takes one.

Kohli picks a single to complete his 50th fifty in ODIs, from 55 balls.

At the halfway stage, India have reached 124 for three in 25 overs, with Kohli on 51 and Shankar on 27.


14:57  Rayudu out for 18; India 3 down:  

Promotion for all-rounder Vijay Shankar as he walks in at No. 5 ahead of Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Kohli drives Zampa to sweeper cover for one and Shankar gets off the mark with one on the leg side.

Zampa drops short as Kohli is quick to rock back and pull it square on the leg side for a four.

Zampa then looks to compensate but ends up bowling a wide half-volley which Kohli drills through the covers for another boundary, to get 10 from the over.

Kohli and Shankar do well to pick Lyon for five singles in his second over.

Zampa struggling with his length as he bowls Shankar a full toss which he hits through midwicket for two runs. The next ball is again a full toss which he hits down to long-on for one and Kohli drives the third ball to deep midwicket for a single.

Shankar gets his third full toss in a row from Zampa and he drives it to long-off for just a single.

Kohli is beaten by one which stays low and even wicketkeeper is beaten as the ball go through his legs and the Indians are able to pick a bye.

The last ball is a googly as Shankar picks it well and clips it to midwicket for one to get seven from the over.

Kohli is looking good on 43 from 45 balls as India reach 97 for three in 20 overs.

14:46  Rayudu out for 18; India 3 down:  

Zampa comes back from the other end. The pressure continues to build as Zampa bowls four dot balls in a row to Rayudu, who then takes one on the off-side and Kohli keeps strike with one from the last ball.

In the next over, Rayudu, who has made nine from 24 balls, breaks the shackles as he drives a full wide delivery from Maxwell through the covers for a four.

Singles off the last two deliveries as India get seven from Maxwell’s fifth over.

Rayudu gets a freebie as he despatches a high full toss from Zampa over midwicket for a four as India look to keep the scoreboard ticking after a few quiet overs.

Off-spinner Nathan Lyon comes into the attack in place of part-timer Maxwell, who bowled a good first spell, taking one for 20 in five overs.

The first ball is fired down the leg side as Kohli goes for the sweep and misses but the ball goes fine for two leg byes.

Kohli then plays the late cut, placing a wide delivery fine on the off-side for a four and then takes one.

Rayudu then plays back and looks to defend against Lyon, who switches to round the wicket. He is beaten as the ball hits the pads and the umpire rules it out leg before wicket.

But Rayudu wastes no time in taking the DRS. The ball has hit in line and going on to hit the middle of middle stump as Rayudu is given out leg before wicket.

Rayudu walks back for 18 as India are reduced to 75 for three in 18 overs, with Lyon picking up a wicket in his first over.


14:29  Dhawan out for 21; India lose 2nd wicket:  

Cummins comes back into the attack. Rayudu defends the first three balls before he pokes at a wide delivery which moves away a bit to beat the bat.

He tries a rash shot off the last ball and is beaten as Cummins bowls another maiden over, his second of the innings as India struggle to 39 for two in 10 overs.

Maxwell continues as Kohli and Rayudu pick two singles each off the off-spinner’s third over.

Australia look to build the pressure with some tight overs. Three dot balls in a row before Cummins bowls a high bouncer to Rayudu and is penalised with a wide.

Rayudu guides the fifth ball down to thirdman for one before Kohli turns the last ball to square leg for two runs.

Maxwell doing a good job with the ball, going at three per over. Two singles from the first four balls before Rayudu drives a full delivery through the covers for two runs and clips the last ball to deep midwicket for one to get four from the over.

India go past the 50-run mark, in the 13th over, with Kohli on 21 and Rayudu on eight.

14:16  Dhawan out for 21; India lose 2nd wicket:  

Kohli runs a wide delivery from Coulter-Nile to thirdman for one before Dhawan flicks one down the leg side fine for a boundary, his fourth, to take his score to 18.

Australia introduce spin early as part-timer Glenn Maxwell comes into the attack, to bowl the seventh over.

Three singles from the first three balls before Dhawan survives a confident shout for leg before wicket. He is beaten again last ball as Maxwell bowls it flatter but yet again the leg before shout is turned down.

Spin from both ends as leg-spinner Adam Zampa comes in from the other end.

He starts with a short ball which Kohli pulls through midwicket for two runs and then takes one to long-off. Three more singles as Zampa gives away six runs in his first over.

In his second over, Maxwell has another huge appeal for leg before wicket turned down against Dhawan, who was trying to turn it on the leg side but missed and was hit on the pads. This time Australia do decide to take the DRS and it turns out to be a good call as the ball is going on to hit the leg stump and Dhawan is given out leg before wicket for 21.

An important outing for Ambati Rayudu, who will need some runs to justify his place in the team.

13:53  Kohli, Dhawan rally India after early wicket:  

Nathan Coulter-Nile starts with a leg side to Shikhar Dhawan, who flicks the next behind square for a four to get off the mark in style.

He defends the next few balls before he clips the last ball through midwicket for two runs.

Virat Kohli gets off the mark as he drives Cummins through the off-side for one before Dhawan defends the rest of the over.

A superb start from Cummins, conceding just one run in two overs, while picking up the key wicket of Rohit.

Coulter-Nile overpitches as Kohli plays a beautiful straight drive past mid-on for a boundary. Two balls later he flicks another full delivery through midwicket for another four as the India captain looks in ominous touch.

In the next over, Cummins tries a short ball but Dhawan is able to pull it powerfully over midwicket for a boundary.

Two balls later, he slashes a wide short ball off the backfoot through point for another four.

India have recovered after the early dismissal of Rohit, to reach 24 for one in five overs.

13:36  Rohit out for a duck; India lose early wicket:  

Pat Cummins to open the bowling for Australia. Rohit Sharma defends the first two balls before he throws his bat at a wide delivery but is beaten.

Another couple of dot balls before Rohit upper cuts a short wide delivery straight into the hands of Adam Zampa on the thirdman fence to fall for a duck.

13:11  Jamtha: A happy hunting ground for Team India:  The Vidarbha Cricket Association’s stadium in Jamtha has proved to be a happy hunting ground for India against Australia, with the hosts having won all the three ODI matches played at the venue with comfortable margins.

India first played the Aussies on October 28, 2009, which was co-incidentally the first match at the VCA Stadium, situated on the outskirts of the Orange City.

In that game, the hosts emerged triumphant by 99 runs and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the then captain, led from the front with his 107-ball 124.

India and Australia then squared off in the sixth ODI of the series on October 30, 2013 and the hosts hammered the visitors by six wickets after the Aussies had amassed 350 for six.

The two teams then clashed in the fifth ODI of the series on October 1, 2017, when again the hosts emerged triumphant by seven wickets.

However, Australia have tasted victory once at this stadium against New Zealand on February 25, 2011, when they won by seven wickets in the Group A match of the World Cup.

13:06  Australia elect to bowl; India unchanged:  

Welcome to the coverage of the second ODI between Australia and India in Nagpur on Tuesday.

Australia captain Aaron Finch has won the toss and elected to bowl.

The visitors have made two changes with Shaun Marsh coming back into the team in place of Ashon Turner.

Australia have also included an extra spinner with Nathan Lyon replacing pacer Jason Benrendorff.

India have retained the same playing eleven which won the first ODI in Hyderabad by six wickets.
