Amid growing tension between India and Pakistan, former prime minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday voiced hoped that saner counsels shall prevail between the leadership of the two countries and they will get back to the task of economic development.
“I do hope that saner counsels will prevail between leadership of the two countries and we will get back to the economic development, which is the basic requirement of India and Pakistan,” Singh said in his address.
Thanking the organisers – an NGO ‘India Next’ that instituted the award in memory of former prime minister Narasimha Rao, Singh said he will cherish the award and it will continue to inspire him for years.
He also said that governments have come and gone but the broad contours of the economy have been the same. He also expressed the hope that history will record his contribution in a better way.

21:19 Samjhauta Express on schedule between Delhi and Attari:
The Railways on Wednesday said the Samjhauta Express will continue to run as per schedule from Delhi to Attari in India, amidst reports that Pakistan has suspended its operations between Wagah to Lahore on its side.
“The train will run as per schedule as of now,” Northern Railway spokesperson Deepak Kumar said about its operation on the Indian side.
The biweekly train, which runs on Wednesdays and Sundays, will leave at 11:10 o’clock tonight as per schedule from the Old Delhi Railway station with 26 passengers aboard — four in AC coach, 22 in non-AC coaches — sources said.
“We have not received any instructions from authorities about any change in the running of the Samjhauta Express. We will follow all instructions given to us in this regard,” said Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.
The train does not have any commercial stops between Delhi and Attari.
Originally, the train offered a through service with one rake going all the way between the terminals – Delhi in India to Lahore in Pakistan. However, now a Pakistani rake stops at Attari at which point passengers have to change trains and board an Indian rake.
The Samjhauta Express, named after the Hindi word for “agreement”, comprises six sleeper coaches and an AC 3-tier coach. The train service was started on 22 July 1976 under the Shimla Agreement that settled the 1971 war between the two nations.
From Lahore, the train departs on Monday and Thursday.
Sources said the footfall on the train, which generally recorded an occupancy of around 70 pre cent, has fallen drastically post the Pulwama attack on February 14 in which 40 CRPF jawans were killed.

20:52 Airlines reroute flights as Pakistan closes its airspace:
Various airlines such as Air India, Jet Airways, Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines on Wednesday announced they were rerouting their flights as Pakistan closed its airspace in the wake of escalating tensions with India.
“Inbound and outbound flights from USA and Europe for Delhi are being re-routed through Ahmedabad and Mumbai. Flights landing into India from USA and Europe are being re-routed via Dubai and Sharjah and will land into India with a delay,” Air India tweeted on Wednesday evening.
The national carrier, however, added “no flights are cancelled and there will only be an increase in the flying time”.
Pakistan on Wednesday closed its airspace for commercial flights and suspended flight operations across major airports, including in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi, for an indefinite period in the wake of the escalating tensions with India.
Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority made the announcement after the director general of Inter-Services Public Relations, the military’s media arm, acknowledged the closure of Pakistan’s airspace due to the prevailing security situation.
Singapore Airlines said due to the airspace closure by Pakistan, two of its Singapore to London flights – SQ308 and SQ318 – will stop for re-fuelling at Dubai and Mumbai, respectively on February 27.
It said the Singapore-Frankfurt flight SQ318 will stop at Mumbai for re-fuelling on February 27 “provided it is able to arrive in Frankfurt before the airport’s curfew”.
“All other flights that overfly affected airspace will be rerouted, but are due to operate as scheduled at this point,” the airline added.
Qatar Airways also stated that it was re-routing its flights due to the airspace closure.
British Airways said it was closely monitoring the situation and its flight plans varied “frequently” depending on a number of factors.
“But our highest and first priority is always the safety of our customers and crew,” it said.
Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu tweeted, “Reviewed the current airspace restrictions with Member, AAI in view of the current cross border situation. I assure you that we are working out modalities so that the air passengers are least inconvenienced. All stakeholders were kept informed. @AAI_Official.”

It was conveyed that India expects Pakistan to take immediate and verifiable action against terrorism emanating from territories under its control, the MEA statement said.
On February 14, 40 Central Reserve Police Force personnel were killed in one of the deadliest terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir when a Jaish suicide bomber rammed a vehicle carrying over 100 kg of explosives into their bus in Pulwama district.
More than 2,500 CRPF personnel, many of them returning from leave to rejoin duty in the Valley, were travelling in the convoy of 78 vehicles when they were ambushed on the Srinagar-Jammu highway at Latoomode in Awantipora in south Kashmir around 3.15 pm.

In a statement issued after it summoned the acting high commissioner of Pakistan, the ministry of external affairs said it strongly objected to Pakistans vulgar display of an injured personnel of the Indian Air Force in violation of all norms of International Humanitarian Law and the Geneva Convention.
It was made clear that Pakistan would be well advised to ensure that no harm comes to the Indian defence personnel in its custody. India also expects his immediate and safe return, the statement read.

Russia on Wednesday urged India and Pakistan to “show restraint” as it expressed “serious concern” about the escalation of hostilities between the two countries.
“We call on both sides to show restraint and step up efforts to resolve existing problems by political and diplomatic means,” the ministry of foreign affairs of Russia said in a statement.
It expressed “serious concern” about the aggravation of the situation along the Line of Control and the outbreak of tensions between the two neighbours.
“We are ready to further assist in strengthening the counter-terrorism potential of New Delhi and Islamabad,” the ministry added.
The fresh confrontation came a day after Indian Air Force launched a counter-terrorism action against a training camp of Jaish-e-Mohammed in Pakistan, based on credible evidence that the UN-proscribed terror group intended to launch terror attacks.
The JeM had taken the responsibility of the terror strike in Kashmir’s Pulwama district on February 14, in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed.

Senior leaders of 21 opposition parties who met in Parliament today said they backed the Armed Forces and expressed deep concern for the air force pilot who went missing during this morning’s engagement with Pakistani Air Force.
But there was sharp criticism for the “leaders of the ruling party” for politicisation of the “sacrifices of the Armed Forces” – a veiled reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who sharply criticised the Congress at a government function earlier this week.
The opposition parties also pointed out that the government has failed to take them into confidence – a convention in such circumstances.
In a statement released at the end of the meeting, the opposition said, “The PM has, regrettably, not convened an all-party meeting as per the established practice in our democracy”. The leaders, the statement said, “urged the government to take the nation into confidence on all measures to protect India’s sovereignty, unity and integrity”.
A resolution, however, was passed which said the opposition will stand with the country and against the enemy at this moment.
The Opposition meeting at the parliament came this afternoon following the escalation in hostilities with Pakistan since yesterday’s airstrikes on a Jaish-e Mohammad terror camp in Balakot. Today, Pakistani Air Force, while attempting to target Indian military installations, was engaged by the IAF. While one Pakistani F-16 aircraft was shot down, India lost a plane, the pilot was declared “missing in action”.

17:38 India, Pak summon envoys over ceasefire violations : Pakistan and India summoned their respective envoys over ceasefire violations today. Pakistan summoned India’s Acting High Commissioner Gaurav Ahluwalia over the alleged “ceasefire violations” after New Delhi foiled an attempt by Pakistan Air Force this morning to carry out strikes in Jammu and Kashmir by shooting down an F-16 fighter plane.
The Director-General South Asia and SAARC Dr Mohammad Faisal told the Indian diplomat to “respect the 2003 ceasefire arrangement” and “its forces should respect and maintain peace on the Line of Control (LoC) and the Working Boundary,” according to a statement by the Pakistan foreign ministry.
India summoned Pakistan Deputy High Commissioner Syed Haider Shah at South Block. He had been summoned by the Ministry of External Affairs and a strong protest was lodged over Pak Air Force’s attempt to attack Indian military installations.

17:19 Commercial operations resume at Amritsar airport: Commercial operations at Amritsar airport, which was suspended early in the day, began even as the airports in Chandigarh, Pathankot, Halwara, Adampur and Bathinda remained on high alert in view of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan.
“The arrival and departure of all civil flights from Amritsar international airport, which was suspended earlier, has began,” Guru Ram Dass International Airport Director Manoj Chansoria said.
However, official sources said the airports in Chandigarh, Amritsar, Halwara, Pathankot, Adampur, Bathinda, Sirsa and Ambala have been put on high alert. Chandigarh airport director Suneel Dutt said commercial operations were on.
Earlier operations at Chandigarh were halted for sometime. Punjab’s six border districts of Fazilka, Ferozepur, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur, Pathankot and Amritsar are on high alert since Tuesday in the wake of the Indian Air Force’s strikes on a Jaish-e-Mohammed terror camp in Pakistan.
Deputy Commissioners and SSPs of border areas have been asked to put in place all contingency plans to ensure protection and safety of citizens, officials said. — PTI

In a very brief press statement, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar, accompanied by Air Vice Marshal R G K Kapoor, also said details are being ascertained about Pakistan’s claim of having captured one Indian pilot.
The statement follows fresh confrontation a day after Indian Air Force launched a counter-terrorism action against a training camp of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) in Pakistan based on credible evidence that JeM intended to launch more attacks.
“Against this Counter Terrorism Action, Pakistan has responded this morning by using its Air Force to target military installations on the Indian side. Due to our high state of readiness and alertness, Pakistan’s attempts were foiled successfully,”Kumar said.
He said the Pakistan Air Force was detected and the Indian Air Force responded instantly. “In that aerial engagement, one Pakistan Air Force fighter aircraft was shot down by a MiG 21 Bison of the Indian Air Force. The Pakistani aircraft was seen by ground forces falling from the sky on the Pakistan side.
“In this engagement, we have unfortunately lost one MiG 21. The pilot is missing in action. Pakistan has claimed that he is in their custody. We are ascertaining the facts,” he said. Both officials did not take any questions from the media. — PTI

14:56 Nine airports in north India shut amid tension with Pak: Nine airports, including the ones in Srinagar and Jammu, were closed on Wednesday for civilian air traffic amid escalating tension with Pakistan, officials said.
Airports at Srinagar, Jammu, Leh, Pathankot, Amritsar, Shimla, Kangra, Kullu Manali, Pithoragarh were among those closed, they said. The move to close the airports comes amid escalation of tension between India and Pakistan after the IAF carried out strikes on terror bases in Pakistan. In Srinagar, an official of the Airports Authority of India told PTI, “The civilian air traffic has been suspended temporarily in view of the emergency”.
While the official did not specify the nature of the emergency, it is believed the step was taken in view of an IAF jet crashing in Budgam district this morning.
Officials said they received instructions from air traffic controllers that the airports have been shut for civilian flights. Some of the flights en route to Jammu, Leh and Srinagar airports have been diverted to their origin stations, they added.

13:16 France to bring proposal to ban Masood Azhar: France is working on a proposal to ban chief of the UN-proscribed Jaish-e Muhammad Masood Azhar and could move it in the Sanctions Committee after it assumes the Presidency of the powerful UN Security Council in March, sources said.
The rotating monthly Presidency of the 15-nation UN Security Council will go from Equatorial Guinea to France on March 1. France, a permanent member of the Council with veto powers, is working on the proposal (to ban Azhar) and it should be ready soon, informed sources told PTI, adding that the proposal against the JeM chief could perhaps be moved in the Sanctions Committee under the French presidency.
“France is focussed on bringing individual listing requests of JeM terrorists to the 1267 Sanctions Committee soon,” they said. The Pakistan-based JeM claimed the responsibility of the heinous suicide attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district on February 14 in which 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed, sparking outrage in India.

India says Pakistan Air Force’s F-16 that violated Indian air space was shot down in Indian retaliatory fire 3 km within Pakistan territory in Lam valley, Nowshera sector, reports news agency ANI. A parachute seen as Pakistan Air Force’s F-16 was going down, condition of the pilot is unknown.
To bring you up to speed, Pakistani fighter jets on Wednesday violated Indian air space in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch and Nowshera sectors but were pushed back by Indian aircraft, senior officials said.
The Pakistani jets dropped bombs while returning, officials said. There were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage.
“The jets entered Indian air space over Nowshera and Poonch sectors this morning,” officials said.
Pakistan said that its jets crossed the Line of Control to undertake strikes in India for “self defence”. Pakistan Foreign Office said in a statement, “Today, Pakistan Air Force undertook strikes across Line of Control from within Pakistani airspace. This was not a retaliation to continued Indian belligerence. Pakistan has therefore, taken strikes at non military target, avoiding human loss and collateral damage. Sole purpose being to demonstrate our right, will and capability for self defence. We have no intention of escalation, but are fully prepared to do so if forced into that paradigm.
“That is why we undertook the action with clear warning and in broad daylight. For the last few years, India has been trying to establish what they call ‘a new normal’ a thinly veiled term for doing acts of aggression at whatever pretext they wish on a given day.
“If India is striking at so called terrorist backers without a shred of evidence, we also retain reciprocal rights to retaliate against elements that enjoy Indian patronage while carrying out acts of terror in Pakistan. We do not wish to go to that route and wish that India gives peace a chance and to resolve issues like a mature democratic nation,” it said.
12:26 Five airports closed for civilian flights: officials: Srinagar, Jammu and Leh airports were among five airports closed on Wednesday for civilian air traffic shortly after an IAF jet crashed in Kashmir’s Budgam district, officials said. The move to close the five airports comes amid escalation of tension between India and Pakistan after IAF carried out strikes on terror bases in Pakistan.
Airports at Chandigarh and Amritsar were among those closed, according to airline officials. In Srinagar, an official of the Airports Authority of India told PTI, “The civilian air traffic has been suspended temporarily in view of the emergency”.
While the official did not specify the nature of the emergency, it is believed the step was taken in view of an IAF jet crashing in Budgam district this morning.

“The civilian air traffic has been suspended temporarily in view of the emergency,” an official of the Airport Authority of India told PTI. Three Pakistani fighter planes violate Indian air space in J-K’s Poonch and Rajouri sectors and drop bombs on the way out, say officials. The Pakistani jets entered Nowshera in Rajouri district but were pushed back by Indian fighter jets, a top official said. “The jets entered into Indian air space over Nowshera sector this morning,” the official said. They were immediately pushed back by Indian jets on air patrol.
All commercial flights have been halted from the Srinagar, Leh, Pathankot airports. Indian air force jets on standby to meet any eventuality.
Important industrial locations, especially those in states bordering Pakistan, are preparing against any war-like emergency. All the airports are being put on ‘level two’ security alerts.
Reliance Industries’s Jamnagar refinery, the HPCL-Mittal refinery in Bhatinda, Nayara Energy’s Vadinar facility, Indian Oil’s Panipat, Mathura and Koyali refineries are in states sharing their border with Pakistan.”

The operation was carried out in light of Pakistan’s refusal to acknowledge and act against terror groups operating from its soil and credible information that JeMwas planning attacks in India, she said.
Swaraj said that India does not wish to see a further escalation of the situation and will continue to act with responsibility and restraint.
She was addressing the 16th Foreign Ministers meeting of Russia-India-China (RIC) in Wuzhen. The conclave is being attended Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Noting that JeM carried out the February 14 Pulwama attack in which 40 CRPF men were killed and several others injured, Swaraj said, “Such dastardly terrorist attacks are a grim reminder for the need of all the countries to show zero tolerance to terrorism and take decisive action against it.”
She said, “In the light of continuing refusal by Pakistan to acknowledge and act against terror groups based on its territory, and based on credible information that JeM is planning other attacks in various parts of India, the government of India decided to take pre-emptive action.” — ANI

10:46 Pakistan violates ceasefire in in Uri : Pakistan on Wednesday violated ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri sector in Baramulla district, officials said. The Indian Army is retaliating strongly and effectively to the cross border firing. More details of the incident are awaited.
Pakistan ceasefire violations have been reported in a number of places along the LoC after the ghastly Pulwama attack orchestrated by Pakistan based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed on a CRPF convoy on February 14.
Two JeM terrorists were gunned down by security forces on Wednesday during an encounter in Memander area of Shopian district in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.
Pakistan on Tuesday violated ceasefire as they resorted to heavy shelling at around 12 to 15 places along the Line of Control (LoC), leaving five Indian Army personnel injured.
The shelling began hours after the Indian Air Force carried out multiple air strikes, targetting terror launch pads in Pakistan’s Balakot and eliminating a large number of terrorists, including top commanders of the terror group which attacked the CRPF convoy in Pulwama.
As per the Indian Army, retaliatory firing resulted in severe destruction and a number of casualties to Pakistan Army personnel.
Pakistani troops were seen firing mortars and missiles from civilian houses, using villagers as human shields. However, the Indian Army targeted Pakistani posts away from civilian localities, the Army said.
Among the five Army soldiers who suffered injuries, two of them were evacuated to Military Hospital for medical treatment. Their condition is said to be stable. — ANI

10:14 Day after air strike, Jaish terrorists killed in encounter in Shopian : Two Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists were gunned down by security forces on Wednesday during an encounter in the Memander area of Shopain district in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.
The encounter, which broke out between the security forces and terrorists in the early hours of Wednesday in Sophian, has ended and security forces have begun the combing operations in the area.
The encounter comes a day after India carried out air strikes at a Jaish-e-Mohammad camp in Balakot in Pakistans Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province.
Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale on Tuesday said Indian Air Force has eliminated a large number of terrorists, including top commanders, during multiple air strikes in the terror launch pads.
The terror camp in a thick forest area atop a hill was led by Ustad Gauri, brother-in-law of JeM chief Masood Azhar, Gokhale said, making a statement before the media, hours after the air strikes using Mirage 2000 were carried out.
In retaliation, Pakistan reportedly violated ceasefire in a number of places along the LoC. Heavy shelling was also reported in the region.

Launching a scathing attack on Pakistan for the February 14 Pulwama terror attack at the Russia, India and China meeting in Wuzhen, she defended India’s airstrikes on terrorist bases in Pakistan, saying that it was pre-emptive action aimed at stopping further attacks by Jaish-e-Muhammed.

“Such dastardly terrorist attacks are grim reminder for all the countries to show zero tolerance to terrorism and take decisive action against them,” she said at the meeting attended by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavarov.
She said after the Pulwama terrorist attack, Pakistan instead of taking seriously the call for the international community to act against the JeM and other terror groups denied any knowledge of the attack and out rightly dismissed claims by the JeM.
“In the light of continued refusal of Pakistan to acknowledge and act against terror groups on its territory and based on credible information that the JeM is planning other attacks in various parts of India, Government of India has decided to take pre-emptive action,” she said.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat said Tuesday the IAF air strike on a terrorist training camp of Jaish-e-Mohammed, the group behind the suicide bombing targeting CRPF personnel in Pulwama, inside Pakistan was a tribute to the martyrs of the Feb 14 assault. He recalled legendary freedom fighter Veer Savarkar’s observation that India needs to become powerful because without power, nobody listens.
He was speaking at the felicitation programme of computer scientist Vijay Bhatkar, who was given the Swatantrya Veer Savarkar Gaurav Puraskar.
“We, as a nation, have the right to take the name of Veer Savarkar, because today we have paid a very appropriate 13th-day tribute to the 40 CRPF jawans martyred in Pulwama,” he said amid slogans of ‘Vande Mataram’.
He was reacting to the pre-dawn air strike by IAF jets on the biggest terrorist camp of Jaish inside Pakistan. The air strike came 12 days after the Pulwama attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed.
Bhagwat said the slogan ‘Vande Mataram’ was not hollow but it has a lot of power.
“The entire world has seen this today,” he said.
“Savarkar’s character and work have been very magnificent. He dedicated his life for the country. Savarkar said we need to become powerful because without power, nobody listens,” the RSS chief said.
“We do not need power to tell the truth. But the world is not like that… They understand only power. Therefore, if we want to show our spirituality, truth and non-violence to the world, then we need to become ‘shastra sampann’ (armed) and ‘shakti sampann’ (powerful),” he said.
“It took us so long to understand this after Independence. This behavioural truth has been very clearly stated by Veer Savarkar,” he said.
“If the Hindu community and our country had followed this motto after Independence, then our history would have been very different. Becoming powerful is very important and the Hindu community should be shakti sampann,” he said.
“It is a truth that Hindustan is a Hindu Rashtra, but if this truth is to be accepted, the Hindu community should have ‘shakti’. Only after this, nobody in the world will dare to stare down Hindus,” Bhagwat said. — PTI

Power supply of certain areas in the strategically located 15 Corps Cantonment in Srinagar was switched off as a precautionary measure Tuesday night, officials said.
Some areas of the cantonment are located on Zaberwan hills and electric supply to this area was stopped in anticipation of a Pakistani retaliation to the pre-dawn strike by IAF jets on the biggest terrorist camp of Jaish-e-Mohammed inside Pakistan, they said.
In the meantime, Pakistan has suspended internet services in the entire occupied Kashmir area, security agencies said. — PTI

In a separate call with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Pompeo emphasised the close security partnership between the US and India and shared goal of maintaining peace and security in the region.
Pompeo is currently in Vietnam to attend the second summit between President Donald Trump and the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on the denuclearsation of the Korean peninsula.
“Following Indian counter-terrorism actions on February 26, I spoke with Indian Minister of External Affairs Swaraj to emphasize our close security partnership and shared goal of maintaining peace and security in the region,” Pompeo said in a statement.
“I also spoke to Pakistani Foreign Minister Qureshi to underscore the priority of de-escalating current tensions by avoiding military action, and the urgency of Pakistan taking meaningful action against terrorist groups operating on its soil,” Pompeo said.
“I expressed to both Ministers that we encourage India and Pakistan to exercise restraint, and avoid escalation at any cost. I also encouraged both ministers to prioritise direct communication and avoid further military activity,” said the Secretary of State.
Last week, US National Security Adviser John Bolton told his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval that America supports India’s right to self-defence as both sides vowed to work together to ensure that Pakistan ceases to be a safe heaven for JeM and other terror groups. — PTI

00:11 Punjab, Gujarat, Himachal on high alert as Pakistan threatens retaliation:
In the aftermath of the Balakot airstrike conducted by the IAF early on Tuesday morning, the bordering states of Punjab, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh have been put on high alert.
Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that his country would respond to what he described as “uncalled-for aggression” and asked his compatriots to prepare for “all eventualities”.
“[The] PM has directed that elements of national power including the Armed Forces and the people of Pakistan to remain prepared [sic] for all eventualities,” said a statement posted by Khan.
Six districts in Punjab – Ferozepur, Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Fazilka – have been put on high alert.
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said, “Punjab is on alert and I will be touring bordering areas tomorrow. We are ready for any eventuality. I told the Union home minister that if there is anything that Punjab can do we are there to for the defence of our country.”
The chief minister reviewed the situation at a high-level meeting with the top brass of the police and civil administration and decided to stay in the sensitive border area for onground assessment of the situation.
Apart from Punjab, Gujarat Police has also issued a “high alert” across the state following India’s preemptive strike on Jaish-e-Mohammed’s biggest terror campaigning Pakistan.
Gujarat’s Director General of Police Shivanand Jha cancelled a conference on crime-related issues scheduled at the Police Bhavan in Gandhinagar and asked all officers to return to their respective headquarters in view of the alert sounded in the state.
The Himachal Pradesh Police issued an alert for all districts in the state.
An alert has been issued to all district SPs in Himachal Pradesh to ensure safety of vital installations and also to keep sharp vigil in their respective districts, Himachal Pradesh Police spokesperson and SP (Law and Order) Khushhal Sharma said.
