Caught on CCTV: Student recklessly rams car into bike in Kovai, drives away

Coimbatore city traffic police have taken a woman into custody for colliding into a bike on Jenney’s Club Road near Peelamedu.

The incident happened on Wednesday evening around 4.30 pm. The CCTV footage taken from a camera looking over Jenney’s Road shows a helmet-clad man riding a motorbike on the left side of the road. As the bike takes a slow left turn, he is seen stopping for a second. A speeding sedan collides with the bike head-on and moves away without stopping. The biker and the bike are both thrown into the air on impact and moments later the man falls on the ground immobilised.

Immediately after the incident, the injured biker, who sustained severe injuries, was rushed to a private hospital in Peelamedu where he is still being treated. He has been identified as Balaji (22) who is a final year engineering student in a private engineering college in Peelamedu.

Upon investigation with witnesses and analysing the CCTV footage, the police identified the vehicle that hit the motorbike and have taken the woman who drove the vehicle at the time of accident into custody. The accused is a 21-year-old college student Darshana Ruth from Kurichi. She was with her friend when she caused the accident.

Speaking to TNM, an officer at the Traffic Investigation Wing said that the accused was taken into custody earlier on Thursday and that an FIR has been registered under sections 279 (Rash driving) and 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC. “We are waiting for the victim to regain consciousness. His injuries are severe. So we will proceed with the FIR in a few hours,” the officer said adding that it is not known if the accused was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the event.
