The Tamil Nadu Budget invited mixed reactions from various quarters minutes after it was presented in the Assembly by O Panneerselvam, the Deputy Chief Minister of the state who also holds the finance portfolio.
Leader of Opposition and DMK President MK Stalin slammed the budget outside the Assembly and said that it was a useless budget. He later tweeted that the ruling AIADMK government had failed miserably in managing the finances of the state and that there’s a deficit in revenue. In his statement, he said that the government focuses on interest payment and not in the development of the state and added that despite fund allocation for projects on paper, nothing materialises on the ground. He also accused Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami of not just allegedly looting Kodanad estate (former CM Jayalalithaa’s property which witnessed a break in and murder in 2017) but also the state.

BJP State President Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan, on the other hand, welcomed the budget and said that it was created with the welfare of the poor and needy in mind. Speaking to the media after the budget was announced, she said that this budget has been created with an intention to work in tandem with the Central government in its welfare schemes. She also slammed MK Stalin for his comment on the budget.

TTV Dhinakaran, Deputy General Secretary of Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) came down heavily on the budget and said that it was intended to cheat the people of Tamil Nadu. Taking to his Twitter page, TTV Dhinakaran said that if the Central Government’s Union Budget is a flower made of paper, the state budget is flower in the ears (a Tamil phrase used to denote cheating). In his two-page statement, he pointed out that the budget speech stated that Tamil Nadu’s grants were not being released by the Central government and that the AIADMK government has pledged the state’s rights with the Centre. However, he added that the high fund allocation for school education department and for agriculture gives small relief.
