Dhawan dealing in boundaries
Shikhar Dhawan is now taking the attack to Tim Southee as he hits him for two boundaries in one over. First he hit the ball straight down the group for a boundary past the mid-off fielder. Then, on the fourth ball, he plays the square drive to perfection.
Four and four
Rohit Sharma comes down the track and hits a boundary off Tim Southee past the long-on fielder. He mis-timed the ball but still got a boundary for it. In the next over, Trent Boult bowls onto the pads of Dhawan and he plays a whip shot to gets a boundary square of mid wicket.
Milestone for Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan has become the second-fastest Indian to score 5,000 ODI runs. Only Virat Kohli is ahead of Dhawan in this list as the India skipper had crossed this milestone in 114 innings.

Leading edge and boundary
Shikhar Dhawan tries to play against the line of the delivery and the ball takes a thick outside edge. Luckily for the southpaw, the ball goes over the infield for a boundary towards the cover region. First boundary of the innings for India.
Indian openers steady
Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma have made a steady start in the chase as after three overs they have scored just 6 runs. The duo aren’t taking any unnecessary risks as they know the target is a small one.
Run-out chance
Rohit Sharma defends a Tim Southee delivery and goes for a quick singles. Wicket-keeper Tom Latham reaches the ball and throws towards the non-striker’s end but the ball hit Rohit. Close shave for the Indian opener as replays showed that Rohit was out of his crease when the ball hit him.
Indian chase begins
Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan are out in the middle and they will begin the Indian chase. Trent Boult will be bowling the first over of the innings as India chase 158 to win the first ODI.
Stat attack
Kuldeep Yadav’s bowling figure of 4/39 is the third best bowling figures by a spinner at this venue. Only Muttiah Muralitharan (5/30) and Daniel Vettori (4/18) are ahead of Kuldeep on this illustrious list.
Kiwis All-out
Kuldeep Yadav scalps the last wicket of the innings as he gets rid of Trent Boult for 1. Kuldeep finishes with 4 wickets and as the leading wicket-taker of the innings for India. Shami scalped 3 while Chahal ended two wickets.
Second six of the innings
Tim Southee sweeps a Kuldeep Yadav delivery for a huge six over mid wicket boundary. Second six of the innings for the Kiwis as Santner had hit the first one. With that, New Zealand have crossed the 150-run mark.
Kiwis nine down
Lockie Ferguson is stumped by MS Dhoni off the bowling of Kuldeep Yadav who picks his third of the day. Third umpire was called up to check the foot of the batsman which was on the line when Dhoni took off the bails.
Second wicket for Kuldeep
Kuldeep Yadav scalps his second wicket of the day as he gets rid of Doug Bracewell for 7. The right hander chops the ball back onto his stumps as Kiwis lose their eight wickets. On the last ball, Kuldeep bowled a googly and the ball crashed into his pads. The umpire said not out but replays showed the ball was hitting the stumps. India didn’t have a review left.
Williamson departs
This is the wicket that India wanted as Kuldeep Yadav gets rid of Kane Williamson. The right hander hits the ball into the hands of the fielder at long on. Kiwis have lost seven wickets now.
Stat attack
Shami picks up his 3rd wicket in the match by dismissing Santner. This is his 7th wicket at Napier which is the second most by a visiting bowler in ODIs. Javagal Srinath leads the charts with 9 wickets to his name in four matches.
Wicket for Shami
Mohammed Shami bowls from around the wickets and the ball crashed into Mitchell Santner’s pads. Umpire raises his finger after thinking for couple of seconds and the batsmen opt against using the review. Kiwis have lost their second wicket now.
India lose their review
Kuldeep Yadav beat the outside edge of Mitchell Santner’s bat but there was some noise and India skipper Kohli oprted to use the DRS. Replays showed that there was no edge and no chance of stumping as well.
‘Nahi, nahi, nahi’ – Dhoni to Kuldeep
Kuldeep Yadav bowls a short delivery and Kane Williamson pulls it for a boundary. Seventh boundary of the innings for Williamson. When Dhoni saw Kuldeep had pitched the ball short he said there words from behind, asking him to change the length.
Half-century for Captain Marvel
Kanel Williamson is holding the innings from one end and he completes his 36th half-century. This is also his 6th consecutive fifty at home against India. The hosts will need their skipper to continue to bat like this for the remainder of the innings.
Stunning catch from Kuldeep
Henry Nicholls hits a Kedar Jadhav delivery on the leg side and Kuldeep Yadav took a brilliant flying catch to get rid of the batsman. First wicket of the day for Jadhav as Kiwis have lost their fifth wicket.
Stat attack
Tom Latham has some interesting number at home compared to his away record in ODIs. His batting average drops by almost 50 % and balls per dismissal rate is worse at home. Out off his 6 ducks in ODIs, five have come in home conditions.
Williamson steady
The Indian bowlers have taken wickets at regular intervals in this game till now but that doesn’t seem to be bothering the Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson. He is looking in fine touch at the moment and with two consecutive boundaries off Chahal, he has made his intentions quite clear. India 91/4
Chahal strikes again
Another wicket for Yuzvendra Chahal! The spinner dismisses Tom Latham as New Zealand are 76/4 in 18.5 overs. Latham played the ball straight back to the bowler and although it was a tough chance, the youngster made no mistake as Kane Williamson lost another partner.
Bowling change
Chinaman Kuldeep Yadav has been introduced into the attack and he replaces Vijay Shankar. Kuldeep bowled well in Australia and will look for a similar sort of impact in New Zealand now.
Dropped catch
India may left to rue this dropped chance as Kedar Jadhav drops Kane Williamson for 20. The Kiwi skipper hit a short delivery straight down the throat of Jadhav at fine leg but he dropped an easy catch.
Chahal breaks the partnership
Spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has done the trick for the visitors as gets rid of dangerman Ross Taylor. The right hander hits the ball into the hands of the bowlers, who takes an easy catch. Kiwis are three down now.
Four and Four
Vijay Shankar bowls short and wide and Ross Taylor cut the ball on the off side and the ball goes over the point fielder’s head for a boundary. Then, Kane Williamson plays the perfect cover drives for a boundary. New Zealand have crossed the 50-run mark now.
Close shave for Taylor
Williamson hits a straight drive and the ball takes a touch of Shakar’s fingers and crashes into the stumps. Replays showed the ball batsman had made his way back into the crease before the bails were dislodged.
Spin has been introduced
After picking up six wickets in the last ODI against Australia, Yuzvendra Chahal will look to leaving a lasting impact today as well. He replaces Bhuvneshwar Kumar into the attack.
Bowling change
All-rounder Vijay Shankar has been introduced into the attack as he looks to impress in absence of suspended Hardik Pandya. He will look to make an impact after doing decently well in Australia.
Run-out chance
Ross Taylor hits the ball towards mid wicket and tried to go for a single. Ambati Rayudu, who was present there, could not gather the ball in time and had he done so, Taylor was struggling to reach the non-striker’s end. Close shave for the right hander.
Shami keeping things tight

Good over from Bhuvi
After conceding boundaries in the first two overs, Bhuvneshwar hits back and bowls well in his third over of the day. He concedes just one run to pile on the pressure on the batsmen.
Shami on fire
Mohammed Shami has picked his second wicket of the day as he now gets rid of southpaw Colin Munro. Shami tried his luck from around the wicket and Munro missed the line of the delivery and it crashed into the wickets. India on top early on in the match.
Munro on the attack
Southpaw Colin Munro takes the attack to Bhuvneshwar Kumar as he hits back to back boundaries of his second over. He played the ball on the up towards deep mid wicket for a boundary and then, smashed the ball over the long off fielder for the second four of the over.
Shami provides the breakthrough
Pacer Mohammed Shami has given India the ideal start as he gets rid of Martin Guptill for just five runs. There were couple of loud LBW appeals early on in the over and when the umpire said not out, Shami took matter into his own hands and uprooted the stumps. First wicket of the day for India.
Boundary to start proceedings
Bhuvneshwar Kumar starts with a dot ball but then bowls onto the pads of Martin Guptill and he flicks the ball for a boundary towards mid wicket. Excellent way to get off the mark for the right hander.
National anthem time
The players are out in the middle for the respective national anthems of the two teams. This is the first match between played at this venue in 2 years and it is going to be a cracking contest between two best teams in the world.

Toss update
New Zealand have won the toss and skipper Kane Williamson has opted to bat first. Kohli says during the toss that the team is well balanced and the players are really looking forward to this series.
Taylor names biggest threat for NZ
“Kohli’s a sensational player, probably the best one day player going round – easily, really,” Taylor was quoted as saying by Stuff. “It’s easy to get caught up in him, but they’ve got two pretty good openers up the top in [Rohit] Sharma and co to come out before Kohli gets in. [Shikhar] Dhawan’s got a very good record as well. I’m sure the fast bowlers will have their work cut out,” he added.

Kohli wary of Kiwi threat
“The fact they are No 3 in the world speaks about their consistency over the last couple of years. We played them in India and got beaten in Mumbai, and all the games were competitive and we felt they had a really good balance. They have that energy and that buzz about them and they play their cricket in the right way which is something we always appreciate,” Kohli said at the pre-series media conference.
