Opposition leaders didn’t question me on announcing Rahul Gandhi as PM: MK Stalin

DMK President MK Stalin on Sunday said that opposition leaders who participated in the anti-BJP meet in Kolkata on Saturday did not question him over his announcement of Congress President Rahul Gandhi as a prime ministerial candidate.

Speaking in Chennai, Stalin said that the political situation in different states is varied. He said the party leaders in Kolkata were of the view that they would voice their opinion on the PM candidate after the Lok Sabha elections.

According to Stalin, none of the party leaders said he was wrong in announcing Gandhi’s name as the PM candidate. “I had announced Gandhi’s name at a function organised by DMK. It was our function. I voiced the feelings of the Tamil Nadu people,” Stalin said, in response to media reports as to why he didn’t reiterate the wish at the Kolkata meeting.

“It is very funny that when I said this, media asked me why you said this but yesterday when I did not say this, the same media is saying why you did not say this,” ANI quoted Stalin as saying.

Stalin proposed the candidature of Rahul Gandhi as the PM candidate in December, ahead of the 2019 general elections. At the ‘United India’ rally held on Saturday in Kolkata organised by West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, he accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of running the country like a private limited company, said that the regime was filled with corruption, and that if Modi were to return to power, it would take India back by 50 years.

The BJP in Tamil Nadu criticised Stalin for the same, and said that it shows that they are hesitant.

“Last month, Stalin said Rahul Gandhi will be the prime ministerial candidate in Chennai. He could not say so in Kolkata,” BJP’s Tamil Nadu president Tamilisai Soundararajan told PTI, and added that it showed their “hesitancy and obstacles”.
