Curtains fell on the 11th edition of the Coimbatore Vizha on Sunday leaving the people of the city wanting more. The festival, or ‘vizha’ as they lovingly call it, was spread over eight days in various locations in Coimbatore.
Launched in 2007, vizha is an annual event organised every year in time for Tamil Nadu’s biggest festival, Pongal. With many marquee events added to the list every year, the vizha scheduled around 140 events this year. From Double Takkar (decker) buses to arts street to science and technology festival to eat street, this year’s vizha had everything that would make the eyes of a visitor pop and the heart of a resident swell up with pride.

One of the new features of the Vizha this year was the science and technology festival which was organised in CODISSIA. Science projects by school and college students were on display. The exhibition also had immersive platforms where visitors could experience augmented reality, virtual reality and robotics.
The double takkar (decker) bus returned this year as well, to take people around the city. The ride was free but people needed register in advance using the Coimbatore Vizha app.
Another new addition this year was the Grand Kovai Parade which was a procession of sorts with people dressed in their native attires. The parade was put in place to appreciate the multicultural face of the city. Teams from around 27 cultural associations took part in the procession in their native attires and put up a glittery show.
The Incredible Coimbatorians wall put up in the Coimbatore International airport was an added attraction to the Vizha this year. The wall was an attempt to tell people about the famous personalities who hailed from the city and their contribution to the city and the country. Students also put up dance performances inside the airport during peak arrival hours as a gesture to welcome those who come to Coimbatore.
Another highlight of the festival was the exhibition of vintage cars from as back as the year 1929. Aston 7 (1947), Ford A (1929), Volkswagen Beetle (1957), Morris Minor (1951) etc took their places in the exhibits this year. Held in Prozone mall in the city, the exhibition had around 30 cars on display.
