3rd Test: Agarwal out for 76; India lose 2nd wicket

10:26  Pujara, Kohli steady India: 

Hazlewood overpitches as Pujara slaps it down the ground past mid-off for a four to take his score to 37.

He nearly throws his wicket away as he attempts the pull shot and ends up mistiming it which falls just short of the fielder at deep square leg for a single.

Cummins continues to trouble the Indian batsmen. He gets a full delivery to come in sharply as Pujara is hit on the pads but the LBW appeal is turned down.

A single to Kohli off Hazlewood as India reach 133 for two in 60 overs.

Pujara has once again looked to grind down the Aussie bowlers, with a patient 38 from 122 balls, while Kohli is on five.


10:10  Agarwal out for 76; India lose 2nd wicket: 

Virat Kohli to take strike after the tea break. He flicks Pat Cummins through the leg side for two runs to get off the mark from the first delivery he faces.

Pace from both ends as Josh Hazlewood comes into the attack from the other end.

No moving Pujara as he solidly blocks out the over from Hazlewood, not trying anything fancy at the start of the session.

Cummins nearly gets the big wicket of Kohli as the India captain inside edges the incoming delivery which narrowly misses the leg stump and he picks up two runs to fine leg.


09:46  Agarwal out for 76; India 123-2 at tea on Day 1:

Pat Cummins struck with the crucial wicket of Mayank Agarwal with the final delivery of the post-lunch session to reduce India to 123 for two at tea on Day 1.

Debutant Agarwal stroked his way to a fluent 76 from 161 balls, hitting eight fours and a six, before he was caught down the leg side, gloving a short ball aimed at his body.

His fellow opener Hanuma Vihari (8) also perished to a short ball in the morning session, fending it straight to Aaron Finch at second slip with Cummins claiming both wickets.

Cheteshwar Pujara was rock solid on 33 from 102 balls, putting on 83 runs for the second wicket with Agarwal to lay a solid foundation.

Earlier, India, who elected to bat, dropped both their regular openers — KL Rahul and Murali Vijay

All-rounder
Ravindra Jadeja also got a game, having recovered from his shoulder
stiffness, while Rohit Sharma came in to bolster the middle order.

Australia made one change to their side replacing Peter Handscomb with Mitchell Marsh.

The series is locked 1-1 with India winning the opening Test in Adelaide and the hosts taking the second in Perth.


09:41  Agarwal out for 76; India 123-2 at tea on Day 1: 

Agarwal takes full toll of a wide half-volley from Cummins, crashing it through the covers for a four to take his score into the 70s.

With tea round the corner, Pujara watchfully plays out the over from Marsh.

Cummins to bowl the final over of the session. Agarwal continues to bat positively as he looks to drive the pacer on the up as he gets a thick outside edge which flies in the gap between second slip and gully for a four.

Cummins gets his man a few deliveries later as Agarwal is caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper Paine for 76 as he gloves a short ball trying to run it fine.


09:35  Agarwal, Pujara take India past 100: 

Cummins comes back into the attack as Agarwal takes a single on the leg side and Pujara turns the third ball on the leg side for a couple.

Mitchell Marsh comes back into the attack as Agarwal picks a quiet single on the leg side to take the score to 113 for one in 50 overs.

Agarwal doesn’t like wasting too many opportunities to score. This time Cummins drifts slightly wide and the youngster steers it past point for two runs.

The last ball nearly takes his wicket as Cummins gets it bounce extra off length and nearly takes Agarwal’s edge.

A close shave for Pujara as he gets an inside edge on to his pads off Marsh but Usman Khawaja at gully diving forward is unable to get to the ball.


09:11  Agarwal, Pujara take India past 100:

Lyon continues as Agarwal plays out a maiden over from the off-spinner. In the next over, Pujara clips Starc through square leg for two runs before he drills the fifth ball through the covers for three runs to raise the 50-run stand for the second wicket from 148 balls.

Pujara gives Lyon the charge before he drives the spinner through the covers for three runs and Agarwal picks one on the leg side.

Lyon drifts wide as Pujara late cuts it through the vacant thirdman region for a four.

Mitchell Marsh comes back into the attack. Agarwal turns the third ball on the leg side for a single to bring up India’s 100, in the 45th over.

The pitch has held no terrors and India’s batsmen have been able to bat relatively trouble free.

Agarwal looking quite comfortable as he punches Lyon to long-on for one and then clips Marsh through square leg in the next over to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Agarwal breaks the shackles as he chips down the track and swings Lyon over midwicket for a six, well away from the fielder at long-on.

He then calmly drives the fourth ball down to long-on for a single.

Left-armer Starc comes into the attack in place of Hazlewood as Agarwal plays out a maiden with utmost caution with some solid defence.

In the next over, Agarwal survives a close shout for LBW as he shuffles across and looks to turn Lyon on the leg side but is beaten and hit on the pads. The leg before call is rejected with the ball pitching just outside the leg stump.

Agarwal is batting on 53 and Pujara is on 19 as India reach 86 for one in 40 overs.

Starc bowls a ripper to Pujara, a short delivery from round the wicket, which forces the batsman to play as the extra bounce beats the edge of the bat.

India have made 29 runs from 13 overs in the first hour of the post-lunch session as they go into the drinks breaks at 86 for one in 41 overs.


08:24  Agarwal hits half-century on debut: 

Australia have looked to build the pressure with some tight bowling, looking to frustrate the Indian batsmen, especially Agarwal, who looks to get on with things.

Agarwal happy to play out a maiden over from Hazlewood before Cummins does the same against Pujara.

Agarwal ends the sequence of 21 dot balls as he steers Hazlewood through point for two runs and then takes a single.

Pujara gets going in the next over as he slaps a wide half-volley from Cummins through the covers for a four.

Off-spinner Lyon comes back into the attack and he starts from round the wicket. Agarwal chips down the track to the second ball and lofts it over mid-off for a four. The last ball is slapped straight back past the bowler for another boundary as Agarwal brings up his half-century on debut, from 95 balls.

A superb knock from Agarwal in his first ever innings in Tests. He has been prepared to bide his time and wait for the right balls to play his shots, and has defended quite well most of the times.

The onus will now be on the youngster to carry on to play a big innings.

In the next over, Pujara clips Hazlewood through square leg for three runs before Agarwal lets the bouncer go.


07:54  Debutant Agarwal gives India a good start: 

Hazlewood will kick off proceedings with the ball after the lunch interval. He starts off with a wide half-volley which Agarwal crashes through the covers to start off the season in some style, with a boundary.

Hazlewood comes back with a good delivery which comes in sharply to beat the right-hander.

Pat Cummins from the other end. Pujara is very watchful at the start of the session as he is content to play out a maiden.


07:04  Debutant Agarwal steers India to 57-1 at lunc on Day 1:

Debutant Mayank Agarwal got off to a good start in Test cricket as he hit a fluent 34 to guide India to 57 for one at lunch on Day 1 of the third Test against Australia in Melbourne on Wednesday.

Agarwal batted positively, to hit three boundaries in his 68-ball knock to help India make a good start after they had elected to bat in the Boxing Day Test at MCG. Cheteshwar Pujara was unbeaten on 10 at the break.

Agarwal put on 40 runs for the opening wicket with Hanuma Vihari, who played a patient innings of eight form 66 balls before he was caught in the slips off Pat Cummins.

The two youngsters opened the batting in place of KL Rahul and Murali Vijay, who were both dropped for this game.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja also got a game, having recovered from his shoulder stiffness, while Rohit Sharma came in to bolster the middle order.
