Chennai cop’s son arrested for sexually abusing 12-year-old girl

Chennai police arrested a 22-year-old youth for allegedly sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl by showing her obscene pictures on his phone. The accused is the son of a sub-inspector and the incident happened in his house in police housing quarters.

According to news reports, Praveen, the 22-year-old son of a traffic sub-inspector and a college graduate took the 12-year-old girl to the terrace of the building. Since the victim’s family also lived in the same building and were known to each other, the girl went with Praveen. When he reached the terrace, he allegedly started showing obscene pictures that were downloaded on his phone to the girl. The girl, who thought that he was going to show her photos of his family, raised an alarm and ran away.

She informed her parents, who rushed to the house of the sub-inspector and started arguing about Praveen’s behaviour. The family then went on to lodge a complaint with the police.

Based on the complaint, the All Women’s police arrested Praveen under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and remanded him to judicial custody.

Recently, data from the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB) showed that there were 320 cases registered in Chennai in two years under various provisions of the POCSO Act. Of the 320 cases registered in 2017 and 2018 (till November 11), only five cases ended up in conviction of the accused. Though experts told The Times of India that the reason for the slowdown in the prosecution process was mainly due to indifference of the agencies involved and the issues in the system like unspecialised police and lack of judicial officers, they also added that there were too many factors involved in this delay of securing justice to the victims.
