Ashwin removes Khawaja
Usman Khawaja’s hard-fought innings comes to an end as he becomes R Ashwin’s third scalp of the day. The ball takes an edge off the glove of the southpaw and keeper Pant takes a good catch. Umpire had called it as not out at first but India opted to use the DRS and replays showed that the ball did brush the glouve. India have picked up their fourth of the day.
Handscomb taking the attack to Shami
Handscomb has now hit four boundaries off the bowling of Shami. After hitting a boundary through the point region in Shami’s last over, Handscomb hits three boundaries in the pacer’s sixth over of the innings. Australia are now scoring runs at a good pace following Handscomb’s introduction at the crease.
AUS trying to rebuild innings
Khawaja and Handscomb are putting on a good partnership following the dismissal of Marsh. The duo have so far put together 14 runs of 49 deliveries and are playing risk-free cricket.
Shami back on the field
Good news for India as Mohammed Shami is back on the field and he has been introduced into the attack by skipper Virat Kohli. Shami had to go off the field after feeling some kind of shoulder discomfort in the first session of the day.

Spinner R Ashwin is asking all the right questions of the Aussie batsmen and he almost picked his third wicket of the day. Ashwin produced an edge off the bat of Khawaja but the ball went a bit wide of Ajinkya Rahane, who was placed at first slip.
Hosts need a partnership
Peter Handscomb has joined Usman Khawaja in the middle now. Australia have been losing wickets at regular intervals and they need a partnership going. At the moment, Indian bowlers are on top over the hosts.

India need wickets early in second session
Ricky Ponting predicted that Usman Khawaja will pip Virat Kohli as the leading run-getter after the completion of the four-match series. Khawaja has been in sublime form recently and India will need to dismiss him soon in the second session to keep the Aussie score under check. Shaun Marsh is the other batsman who could trouble India.
First session ends
Australia have reached 57/2 after the completion of the first session of the day’s play. Khawaja is batting on 21 while Marsh is at 1. As for India, Ishant Sharma and R Ashwin scalped one wicket each. Australia trail India by 193 runs at lunch.
Australia cross 50
It has takes Australia 26.2 overs to cross the 50-run mark. Khawaja and Marsh will look to consolidate Australia’s position in the match by putting on a good partnership here. As for India, they need to dismiss of these two batsmen as soon as possible.
Maiden over from Bumrah
With lunch not too far away now, Australian batsmen seem to be content with just defending the deliveries from Ashwin and Bumrah. The pacer now bowls a maiden over to Khawaja who has now scored 18 off 83.
Dangerous Marsh at the crease now
Shaun Marsh has joined Usman Khawaja in the middle now and these two have the capability to bat for long. India need to get rid of this partnership as soon as possible to have any chance of bundling the hosts out for a par score.

Ravichandran Ashwin has finally managed to break this partnership as he gets rid of Marcus Harris for 26. Soft dismissal for Australia as the ball takes an inside edge, hits the batsman’s pads and Murali Vijay takes an easy catch at forward short leg.

Southpaw Harris is taking the attack to Ashwin as he hits him for second boundary in as many overs. After hitting him straight down the ground in the previous over, Harris now drives the ball through the covers for his third four of the innings.

Maiden over from Shami
Harris and Khawaja are negating the effect of Indian bowlers well at the moment. They know they don’t need to take any unnecessary risks and are playing according to the merit of the delviery.
Good first over from Ashwin
Ashwin concedes just two runs from his first over but India need wickets at this point in time. Khawaja and Harris have put together 33 runs already and they are motoring along nicely at the moment. A wicket here for India could change the proceedings drastically.
Drinks break
Two wickets have fallen in the first hour of today’s play. Mohammed Shami was became the last Indian batsman to fall while Aaron Finch was the first Australian players to be dismissed. R Ashwin is now being introduced into the attack as India look to break this partnership between Khawaja and Harris.
Bowling change
Mohammed Shami is being introduced into the attack and he replaces Ishant Sharma. Khawaja and Harris are slowly and steadily getting into their stride now as they are putting on a good partnership for the second wicket.
Good pressure from Ishant
Ishant Sharma is constantly troubling the batsmen by changing his length. Debutant Marcus Harris is particular is not able to read Ishant’s bowling and he has been beaten outside the off stump on a few occasion already.
Edge but boundary
Marcus Harris seems to be playing with fire at the moment as he almost hit the ball into the hands of the gully fielder. Bumrah bowled short and Harris hit it last moment and it went for a boundary towards third man. The debutant is looking increasingly settled with every passing over.

Ishant Sharma has now bowled four overs this morning and he has conceded just 3 runs. More importantly, he has bowled three maidens and he is constantly asking the right questions off the batsmen.

Since the wicket of Finch, southpaws Marcus Harris and Usman Khawaja have looked solid in the middle. The duo have negotiated Ishant and Bumrah well and have put on 11 runs off 27 deliveries.

Good first over from Bumrah
Unsurprisingly, Jasprit Bumrah shows in his first over that he means business. He hit the deck hard in the second over of the innings and gave away just two runs off it. Indian pacers have made a good start in the innings.

Shane Warne tweeted: “Terrific innings from Pujara or “Steve” as the Yorkshire men called him as they couldn’t pronounce his first name Cheteshwar ! Congrats on a great 100”. Pujara has had two stints as an overseas player for county side Yorkshire, in 2015 and again during the recent English summer. He has also appeared for Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

Sachin Tendulkar tweeted: “The game is wide open at this stage. The way the new ball is used in Australia in the first 15-20 overs is extremely crucial and could very well have an impact on which way this Test could go.” The Indian bowlers have been brilliant in the recent past and have gained rave reviews for their performances in South Africa and England and will hold the key if India are to make a comeback in this Test match.

Pujara’s unwanted record
Pujara has now been dismissed run out 4 times in 2018, which is the most for any batsman this year. This is also the most number of times an Indian batsman has been run out in a year and the joint-most overall along with former Australian captain Bill Lawry, who had set this unwanted record in the year 1964.
Starc on Australia’s Day 1 exploits
“I thought we bowled really well for four hours, probably pretty well for another hour and probably got it a bit wrong at the end there. Cheteshwar Pujara batted a lot of time. He’s someone who likes to absorb pressure and bat a long time, and credit to him he scored a fantastic hundred. I think if you asked us at the start of the day if we’d take losing the toss and India being 9 for 250 at stumps I think we’d bite your arm off.”
Milestone for Lyon
The 31-year old was back among wickets during Day 1 of the first Test in Adelaide as he dismissed Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant to take his tally against India to 66 wickets. That is currently the highest number of wickets he has taken against any opposition in Tests as he surpassed his tally of 65 wickets against England. Lyon has dismissed 15 batsmen five or more times in Tests and five of them are from India. Three of them are India’s biggest hope and they are Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli.
Pujara saved the day for India
The 30-year-old compiled a patient 123 in hot and difficult conditions at Adelaide Oval to help India stay in the opening Test against Australia with 250-9 at stumps. “It was one of my top innings in Test cricket, I could say top five. I can’t rate whether it was one of the best but the teammates who were appreciating said that this is one of the best,” he said.“I was a bit disappointed but I had to take that single because only the last two balls were left and I thought I should be on strike, so I took the chance but he fielded brilliantly.”
