Chennai cop, allegedly a repeat offender, held for flashing schoolgirls

A 57-year-old policeman, who would otherwise have led a normal retired life after four months, was arrested on Sunday after he was caught flashing a 10-year-old girl in Villivakkam. Following his arrest, he was also suspended from his service. K Vasu worked as Special Sub Inspector in the Madhavaram Milk Colony police station.

A resident of Kolathur, Vasu used to stand near a government school in Villivakkam regularly during evenings and make indecent and lewd gestures at students who were leaving school, according to reports. Usually, students who see him flash run away from in panic. On Saturday, too, he continued his antics and flashed a 10-year-old girl.

The girl, who had earlier witnessed him make lewd gestures, had also reportedly complained about him twice to her parents. But her parents did not take her complaints seriously and ignored, the police told Times of India. This time, however, Vasu was caught in the act by a group of youngsters, who were standing nearby.

Although Vasu sped away in his bike, the youngsters managed to catch him at SIDCO Nagar in Villivakkam and started thrashing him.

Seeing a group of young men assaulting a police officer, the residents in SIDCO Nagar alerted the control room, which sent a patrol vehicle to the spot and took all of them to the police station.

On questioning the youngsters, the police came to know of the issue and hence transferred the case to an All Women’s Police Station.

However, according to some news reports, the girl’s parents lodged a complaint with the Villivakkam police, who let Vasu off with a warning. Aggrieved by this, the parents then approached senior officers demanding strict action on Vasu, after which, the case was transferred to All Women’s Police Station.

The women police then registered a case on Vasu under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). Vasu was arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
