The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) has announced a power shutdown from 9 am to 4 pm in the following areas on Friday for maintenance works. It has also announced that if the works are completed earlier, the power will be restored immediately.

The list of areas which will have a 7-hour power cut on Friday are:

Madhavaram: South and North Telephone colony, Padmavathi nagar, Majestic avenue, Venu nagar, Perumal koil 1st st, Mandavaeli, Venkateshvara nagar, Telugu colony, AVM nagar, Vasantham avenue, Ramana avenue, Ganesh nagar and Ramachandra nagar.

It was only in September that the President of DMK MK Stalin accused the ruling AIADMK government for maladministration due to unscheduled power cuts across the state under the garb of maintenance works. He alleged that the state government was incapable of dealing with the demand for electricity in the state. Stalin also said that there was an unprecedented financial crisis in electricity distribution in the state.

Days after this accusation, Minister for Electricity P Thangamani hit back saying that the power cuts were owing to maintenance works and not due to power shortage. The minister also stated that the power demand in the state is being met by the thermal, hydro and gas sources along with solar and wind energy sources. Minister Thangamani also said that reliable power supply was being provided to ‘all categories of consumers’ through state-owned thermal and hydro stations as well as power purchase from the open market.
