Anna University has announced that theory examinations scheduled for Friday will now be conducted on December 13. The University has also postponed examinations scheduled for November 17 to December 14. The examinations have been rescheduled on account of Cyclone Gaja, which hit the coastal areas in Tamil Nadu on Friday.
In a statement, the University said, “It is informed that the theory examinations scheduled on 16-Nov-2018 of Nov/Dec 2018 Examinations of Anna University pertaining to all affiliated colleges of the UG/PG degree programmes are rescheduled due to Cyclone. The postponed examination date is 13-Dec-2018. This may please be brought to the notice of students, staff and all concerned.”
The university had earlier announced the cancellation of all examinations scheduled on Thursday, November 15.
Cyclone Gaja made landfall in the early hours of Friday morning, leaving a trail of destruction centred predominantly in Nagapattinam. As the India Meteorological Department had predicted, roofs of homes, power lines and metal sheets had blown off. Over 76,000 people were preemptively evacuated on Thursday across Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai and Thiruvarur districts.
As of 1.30 pm on Friday, the cyclonic storm was over interior Tamil Nadu, moving nearly westwards. It further weakened into a deep depression, about 80 km northwest of Madurai.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government has announced a solatium of Rs 10 lakhs to the families of those who passed away due to the cyclone. According to media reports, over 20 people from across seven districts in Tamil Nadu had died due to electrocution, wall or tree collapses.
For those with major injuries, the Chief Minister’s General Relief Fund will provide Rs 1 lakh as compensation while those with minor injuries will be given Rs 25,000.
The IMD also predicted thunderstorms and moderate rain in some areas of Vellore, Salem, Vizhupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Madurai and Theni districts on Friday evening.
