On a day when the ruling AIADMK government went about registering its opposition to the movie Sarkar, the RK Nagar MLA and the chief of the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) TTV Dhinakaran said that there was no need to take such movies seriously.
Addressing the press in front of his house in Adyar, Chennai on Thursday, TTV Dhinakaran stated that Sarkar was a commercial movie made to serve the commercial interests of those who were involved in it and not a documentary movie aimed at informing the masses.
“The movie was screened in theatres for tickets and the actors in it also acted for a remuneration. Why take such people seriously and give more business to such movies? The movie will run like other movies only, but you guys (the media) will give it free publicity and make people watch it,” he said.
Responding to a query if Sarkar was the first step for actor Vijay to enter into politics, he said that anybody can enter into politics if they wanted to. Coming down heavily on the anti-freebie stand taken by the movie, TTV Dhinakaran said that freebies given by the government has helped many people to get education and also to earn a living as a farmer. Calling the movie biased against the Jayalalithaa regime, he said, “If they were truly brave, they must have also shown the free television (given by the DMK regime when they came to power) and the sticker pasted in that and shown it to be burnt by someone in the movie.”
Taking a dig at the hypocrisy of the filmmakers, TTV Dhinakaran said that if they were truly concerned about the welfare of the state and the people, then they would not have sold Sarkar tickets for high prices above what was mandated by the government. “Why do they sell tickets in black? Does that income go to the government?” he asked.
“If they had produced, directed and acted in such a movie when Amma (former CM J Jayalalithaa) was alive, then we could have accepted that they are brave,” he stated, adding that it was not civil to make movies in a manner that was insulting to the leaders who are not alive.
