Friends give newly married TN couple ‘petrol’ as wedding gift amid soaring fuel costs

As fuel prices skyrocket across the country, one couple from Cuddalore was given petrol on their wedding by friends as a gift. Elanchezian and Kanimozhi got married on Sunday morning in Cuddalore district’s Kumaratchi. Friends of the groom who attended the wedding handed over five litres of petrol to the couple as a present.

Prabhu, a student of Chennai’s Nandanam Arts College and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) member, gifted the newlyweds a can filled with petrol.

He reportedly told the media that this was an effort to create awareness on the rising prices of fuel across the country. “Fuel prices are rising steeply across the country. So, some of Elanchezhian’s friends including me, decided to present the couple with petrol and alert the people about the valuable product.”

Elanchezian and Kanimozhi were greeting guests at the wedding venue, when his friends came in and gave them this peculiar gift. A 39-second video clip of the couple receiving the can was released by Tamil TV channel Puthiya Thalaimurai and has been circulating on social media as well.

Another friend of the couple, Deepa, said to The New Indian Express, “Since the fuel prices were surging for the last few weeks, we wanted to bring it to the fore how a common man had been getting affected due to the hike. The couple felt happy after receiving our gift.”

Petrol prices have reached Rs 85.15 per litre in Tamil Nadu, which are an all-time high for the state.

Following the steep rise in petrol costs, BJP President Amit Shah has stated that the government will look into the issue and take action soon.
