AIADMK rejoices in Alagiri’s revolt, mouthpiece gives ‘split’ verdict for DMK

MK Alagiri hit the headlines on Monday, when he paid respects to his father and late former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at the Marina beach, where the leader is buried. His comments – not entirely surprising – got everyone’s attention nonetheless. But while Alagiri did not ‘proclaim’ anything as such, his sarcastic comments have come as music to the ears of DMK’s rival and Tamil Nadu’s ruling party, the AIADMK.

On Tuesday, the AIADMK mouthpiece Namadhu Amma came out with a ‘split’ verdict – literally. Their main story is headlined, ‘DMK is breaking into two’ – and, though sources in the Stalin camp have been telling the media that Alagiri’s possible revolt is not of much concern to them, the paper has declared that his comments have left DMK leaders ‘jittery’.

Alagiri had told reporters on Monday, “They will not put what I say on Kalaignar TV or Sun TV. I was expressing my anguish to my father. All the men loyal to Kalaignar are on my side.”

After this declaration, he went on to say that ‘only time will tell’ whether this meant he was challenging the existing DMK leadership.

Namadhu Amma meanwhile said that this announcement from Alagiri, a day before DMK’s Executive committee meeting, has made the senior party leaders jittery.

The paper went into Alagiri’s troubled history with the DMK, and said, “Although Karunanidhi tried to foster peace between the two brothers, he could not do it. Stalin also worked hard with the intention of removing Alagiri and finally Alagiri was expelled from the party. Since then, he has not been accepted into the DMK.”

K Isakkimuthu, one of Alagiri’s loyalists told Namadhu Amma that only if Alagiri and his son Dayanidhi Alagiri are given plum party posts will the DMK be able to function properly.

According to the paper, Alagiri’s supporters have also demanded that he be made the General Secretary or the President of the DMK and an important post be given to Dayanidhi Alagiri.
