Would have been buried at Marina myself if space for Karunanidhi not given: Sta…

Dravida Munnetra Kazhgam (DMK) working president MK Stalin on Tuesday hailed the party’s legal wing for getting the Madras high court direction for burial of party supremo M Karunanuidhi at the Marina Beach, saying he would have been buried there himself if they had not secured the permission.

“People are lauding me for getting a direction from Madras high court to bury Karunanidhi in Marina. However, the credit should go to the legal wing of DMK. If we failed in the legal battle, I could have been buried in Marina instead of Karunanidhi,” an emotional Stalin said at the party’s crucial executive meeting here.

He said he had met chief minister Edappadi Palaniswamy to asking for place for Karunanidhi to be buried in Marina but was told that there is no rule for that as the site was only for chief ministers who had passed away while in power.

“Even I requested Palaniswamy, but he did not assure anything,” said Stalin, who broke down while recalling the incident.

Subsequently, a group of lawyers marched to the residence of acting chief justice of the Madras high court Hulavadi Ramesh at 10.30 pm and a midnight hearing commenced. Eventually, the DMK won the legal battle.

Speaking at the meeting earlier, DMK principal secretary Duraimurugan lauded Stalin, giving him the credit of placing the Kalaignar next to his ‘brother’ and mentor CN Annadurai at the Marina Beach.
