Kiran Bedi trolled over ‘We Win’ tweet after France’s FIFA World Cup victory

Puducherry’s Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi said on Monday she was sharing the joy of France’s World Cup win over Croatia with the residents of the Union territory, which was once a French colony, after being trolled for her congratulatory tweet.

“You had to see Pondicherry yesterday, we streamed the FIFA final on the beach, people in Pondicherry are very proud of their French heritage. People felt related to the French team, they felt a part of them won the World Cup,” Bedi was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

The former Indian Police Service officer also said people in Puducherry “wanted France to win the World Cup as the Union Territory has a very memorable and historical bond with France.” Thousands of people in the Union territory have maintained close ties with France, which also generously supports Puducherry in several ways, she added.

She had congratulated the residents of Puducherry on Sunday after France defeated Croatia 4-2 in the Fifa World Cup final match in Moscow to win the title for the second time.

“We the Puducherrians (erstwhile French Territory) won the World Cup. 👏👏🤣🤣 Congratulations Friends.

What a mixed team-all French. Sports unites,” Bedi, who has more than 11 million followers, tweeted.

Soon after, users of the social media platform attacked Bedi for “glorifying former colonial masters” and asked her to delete her tweet.

“We are Indians Madam. Your publicity stunts need to stop..” said one of the users.

“Imagine if England wud have won..RSS would have declared a national holiday,” another user jeetuk77 said.

“You would have celebrated if England had won the WC? India was once a British colony 🙄,” Rafeeq CE tweeted.

There were some who pointed out that Puducherry did have a connection with France.

“I don’t see anything wrong when she said ex French colony. There is a lot of French influence right from buildings to cuisine. Also note the emojis which clearly shows that it is said in lighter vein. Everyone should have a humorous streak ! So don’t preach unnecessarily,” Gautam Dey said.
