In a related development, Madras High Court today directed the state government to file a status report on a plea for reconstruction of the fish market at Nadukuppam.

First bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M. Sundar gave the directive when a PIL filed by advocate P Pugalenthi on the matter came up for hearing.

“We would like to have a status report from the government before considering issue of notice in the matter, the bench said.

The petitioner also sought a medical camp for the Nadukuppam residents, who he claimed were attacked by police on January 23 for protecting student protesters.

Stating that he was among several people who visited Nadukuppam on a fact-finding mission, he claimed that the residents told them that men in uniform had set fire to the fish market.
